Ezekiel 23 · Grade 4

They Defiled My Sanctuary

Name Date

Read and Think

God gave Ezekiel a picture-story about two sisters. They were the daughters of one mother. Oholah, the elder, stood for Samaria. Oholibah stood for Jerusalem. Both belonged to God. The story shows how they broke faith with him.

Each sister ran after the strong nations instead of God. Samaria leaned on Assyria and took up its idols, and in the end Assyria conquered her. Jerusalem watched her sister fall but did not learn. She looked to Assyria, then Babylon, then Egypt. She trusted their strength and their gods.

God summed up Jerusalem's sin: she had forgotten him and cast him behind her back. The sisters had defiled his sanctuary and profaned his Sabbaths. Because Jerusalem walked in the way of her sister, God would give her sister's cup into her hand, a cup of sorrow and desolation.
