Ezekiel 21 · Grade 4

Until He Comes

Name Date

Read and Think

God told Ezekiel to set his face toward Jerusalem and prophesy against the sanctuaries and the land. Judgment was coming, and God pictured it as a sword drawn from its sheath that would not return. Because the people kept refusing to turn, the warning was now certain.

God told Ezekiel to sigh before the people with a broken heart and with bitterness. When they asked why, he was to say it was because of the news that was coming. Ezekiel then drew a map showing the king of Babylon at a fork in the road, choosing between Ammon and Jerusalem. He would choose Jerusalem.

God spoke to the wicked prince of Israel, Zedekiah. His crown would be removed. What was low would be exalted, and what was high would be brought low. God would overturn the kingdom until he comes whose right it is, and God would give it to him. Christians have read this as pointing to a true King from David's line.

  2. Why did Ezekiel sigh with a broken heart?

Ezekiel 21 · Grade 5

Whose Right It Is

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 21 gathers several sword oracles. God told Ezekiel to set his face toward Jerusalem and declare that Yahweh had drawn his sword from its sheath. The image is stark because the people had ignored every gentler warning. The parable of the southern forest at the end of chapter 20 is here explained plainly: the fire is God's judgment on Jerusalem and the land.

The prophet was not to deliver this message coldly. God told him, sigh with a broken heart and with bitterness before their eyes. When asked why, he would point to the news that was coming, at which every heart would melt. Then Ezekiel acted out the scene at a crossroads: the king of Babylon, using divination, would choose the road to Jerusalem rather than Rabbah of the Ammonites. What looked like pagan chance was under God's control.

The climax is addressed to Zedekiah, the prince of Israel whose day had come. God commanded, Remove the turban, and take off the crown. The low would be exalted and the high abased. I will overturn, overturn, overturn it. This also will be no more, until he comes whose right it is; and I will give it. The words echo Genesis 49:10, where the scepter belongs to the one from Judah to whom the obedience of the peoples will be. In the New Testament, Luke 1:32 says: He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did God tell Ezekiel to sigh with a broken heart?

  2. What does the crossroads scene show about God's control?

  3. What earlier promise does whose right it is echo?

  4. Which New Testament verse speaks of giving the throne of David?
