Ezekiel 21 · Grade 5
Whose Right It Is
Read and Think
Ezekiel 21 gathers several sword oracles. God told Ezekiel to set his face toward Jerusalem and declare that Yahweh had drawn his sword from its sheath. The image is stark because the people had ignored every gentler warning. The parable of the southern forest at the end of chapter 20 is here explained plainly: the fire is God's judgment on Jerusalem and the land.
The prophet was not to deliver this message coldly. God told him, sigh with a broken heart and with bitterness before their eyes. When asked why, he would point to the news that was coming, at which every heart would melt. Then Ezekiel acted out the scene at a crossroads: the king of Babylon, using divination, would choose the road to Jerusalem rather than Rabbah of the Ammonites. What looked like pagan chance was under God's control.
The climax is addressed to Zedekiah, the prince of Israel whose day had come. God commanded, Remove the turban, and take off the crown. The low would be exalted and the high abased. I will overturn, overturn, overturn it. This also will be no more, until he comes whose right it is; and I will give it. The words echo Genesis 49:10, where the scepter belongs to the one from Judah to whom the obedience of the peoples will be. In the New Testament, Luke 1:32 says: He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David.
