Ezekiel 2 · Grade 3

Don't Be Afraid

Name Date

Read the Story

God called Ezekiel son of man. He told him to stand up, and the Spirit set him on his feet. God sent him to the children of Israel. They were a rebellious house, which means they kept turning away from God.

God told Ezekiel to speak God's words to them. Some might listen, and some might refuse. Either way, they would know a prophet had been among them. God said not to be afraid of their words or their looks.

God also told Ezekiel not to be rebellious himself. Then Ezekiel saw a hand stretched out to him. In it was a scroll of a book. It had writing on the front and the back.

Memory Verse

“You shall speak my words to them, whether they will hear or whether they will refuse; for they are most rebellious.”

A Prophet Among Them

Name Date

Read and Think

In Ezekiel 2 the voice from the vision speaks. God calls Ezekiel son of man and tells him to stand on his feet. As God spoke, the Spirit entered into Ezekiel and set him on his feet.

God sends Ezekiel to the children of Israel, whom he calls a nation of rebels. Their fathers had also turned against God. God tells Ezekiel to say, This is what the Lord Yahweh says. Whether they listened or refused, they would know that there had been a prophet among them.

God warns that speaking would be hard, like living among briers, thorns, and scorpions. Still, God tells him not to be afraid or dismayed. Ezekiel must listen to God and not be rebellious like them. Then a hand gives him a scroll. Lamentations, mourning, and woe were written on it.

Ezekiel 2 · Grade 5

Whether They Hear or Refuse

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 2 continues right after the vision of Yahweh's glory. Ezekiel had fallen on his face, but the voice told him to stand on his feet so that God could speak with him. The Spirit entered into him and set him on his feet. Ezekiel did not stand up by his own strength; God lifted him.

God gives Ezekiel a hard task. He is sent to the children of Israel, who are impudent and stiff-hearted. Ezekiel is not told that they will listen. He is told to be faithful and to speak God's words to them, whether they will hear or whether they will refuse. Success would be measured by obedience, not by how many people agreed.

God knew the work would hurt, so he speaks honestly about the briers, thorns, and scorpions around Ezekiel. Three times he says not to be afraid. Ezekiel himself must listen first: Don't be rebellious like that rebellious house. Then a hand holds out a scroll, written within and without with lamentations, mourning, and woe. In the New Testament, 2 Timothy 4:2 gives a similar charge: preach the word; be urgent in season and out of season.

Show What You Know

  1. How did Ezekiel get up from the ground?

  2. How would Ezekiel's success be measured?

  3. What did Ezekiel have to do before speaking to others?

  4. What New Testament verse gives a similar charge?
