The Vine Tree

Name Date

Read the Story

God asked Ezekiel what the vine tree is more than any tree of the forest. Other trees give strong wood for building.

Vine wood cannot be used to make anything. Men do not even take a pin of it to hang a vessel on. It is only good for the fire.

A vine is planted to bear fruit. God's people were like a vine that did not bear fruit. They had acted unfaithfully toward God.

Ezekiel 15 · Grade 4

Is It Profitable for Any Work?

Name Date

Read and Think

God asked Ezekiel a simple question: What is the vine tree more than any tree of the forest? Oak and cedar make beams and furniture. Vine wood is thin and twisted. It cannot be used to make anything, not even a pin to hang a vessel on.

If vine wood is useless when it is whole, it is even less useful after the fire has burned both its ends and the middle. God asked how it could be suitable for any work then. The vine's only purpose is to bear fruit.

God said the people of Jerusalem were like that vine wood. Israel was often called God's vine, planted to bear fruit for him. When they turned from him and bore no fruit, they lost their purpose. Because they acted unfaithfully, judgment would come and the land would be desolate.

  3. Who did God say was like the vine wood?

Ezekiel 15 · Grade 5

The Vine Wood

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 15 is the shortest chapter in the book, a single parable built on a question. What is the vine tree more than any tree, the vine branch which is among the trees of the forest? Israel prided itself on being God's vine, an image used in Psalm 80 and Isaiah 5. But God reminded them that a vine's value lies only in its fruit. As timber it is worthless: no one takes a pin of it to hang any vessel on.

The parable presses further. Behold, when it was whole, it was suitable for no work. How much less, when the fire has devoured it? Jerusalem had already been through the fire, like a vine burned at both ends. The people in the city thought they had survived as the favored branch, but a fruitless, charred vine is even less useful.

God then applied the parable directly: as the vine wood among the trees of the forest, so he would give the inhabitants of Jerusalem. They would go out from one fire only to meet another. The reason is stated in the final verse: they have acted unfaithfully. Privilege without fruit offered no protection. In the New Testament, John 15:5 says: I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me and I in him bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

Show What You Know

  1. Why does God point out that vine wood is useless as timber?

  2. What does the vine burned at both ends represent?

  3. What reason does the final verse give for judgment?

  4. What New Testament verse describes bearing fruit by remaining in Christ?
