Foxes and a Whitewashed Wall

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Ezekiel to speak against prophets who prophesied out of their own heart. They had seen nothing from God. God said they were like foxes in the waste places.

They had not gone up into the gaps or built up the wall to protect the people. Instead they promised peace when there was no peace.

God said they were like people who plaster a weak wall with whitewash. A storm would come with rain and hailstones, and the wall would fall. Then everyone would see that their words were not true.

Ezekiel 13 · Grade 4

Peace When There Is No Peace

Name Date

Read and Think

God told Ezekiel to prophesy against the prophets of Israel who prophesied out of their own heart and followed their own spirit. They had seen nothing. God compared them to foxes in the waste places, animals that dig among ruins instead of repairing them.

A true prophet would go up into the gaps and build up the wall for the house of Israel, calling the people back to God before trouble came. These prophets did the opposite. They said Yahweh had sent them when he had not, and they told the people there was peace when there was no peace. That was like plastering a cracked wall with whitewash.

God said a storm would come, with an overflowing shower and great hailstones, and the wall would fall. Then people would ask where the plaster was. God also spoke against women who used false magic and lied to his people for handfuls of barley and pieces of bread. God promised to deliver his people from all these lies.

Show What You Know

  1. Why were the false prophets compared to foxes?

  2. What should a true prophet do in the gaps?

  3. What does whitewashing a weak wall picture?

  4. What did God promise to do for his people?

Ezekiel 13 · Grade 5

Whitewash and the Storm

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 13 confronts the religious voices that kept Judah comfortable in sin. These prophets prophesied out of their own heart, following their own spirit, and had seen nothing. God compared them to foxes in the waste places, scavengers who make dens in ruins rather than rebuilding them. They had not gone up into the gaps or built up the wall for the house of Israel, to stand in the battle in Yahweh's day.

Their central lie was simple: they seduced God's people, saying, Peace; and there is no peace. Ezekiel's image is memorable. When the people built a flimsy wall, these prophets came behind and plastered it with whitewash, making it look solid. A storm of rain and hailstones was coming, and the wall would collapse, uncovering its foundation. Then all would ask where the plaster had gone. Comforting words could not hold back a judgment that only repentance could prevent.

God also exposed women who practiced divination with magic bands and veils, trading lies for handfuls of barley and pieces of bread. Their lies grieved the heart of the righteous, whom God had not made sad, and strengthened the hands of the wicked, so that he should not return from his wicked way. God promised to tear away their snares and deliver his people. In the New Testament, 2 Timothy 4:3 warns that people will not listen to sound doctrine, but, having itching ears, will heap up for themselves teachers after their own lusts.

Show What You Know

  1. What does whitewashing a flimsy wall picture in the false prophets' ministry?

  2. What does it mean to go up into the gaps?

  3. What two effects did the lies have on the righteous and the wicked?

  4. What New Testament verse warns about itching ears?
