Baggage for Moving

Name Date

Read and Think

God told Ezekiel that he lived in the middle of a rebellious house, people who had eyes to see and did not see and ears to hear and did not hear. Perhaps a sign acted out before their eyes would make them consider. So Ezekiel prepared his baggage for moving, like someone going into exile.

By day Ezekiel brought out his baggage in their sight. In the evening he dug through the wall with his hand, carried his baggage on his shoulder in the dark, and covered his face. In the morning God told him to explain. Ezekiel was a sign: the prince in Jerusalem and the people would go into exile in the same way.

God also told Ezekiel to eat his bread with quaking, a sign of the fear coming to the land. The people had a proverb that the days are prolonged and every vision fails. God said he would end that proverb. The word he speaks will be performed, and it will be no more deferred.

  2. What did Ezekiel do in the evening?

Ezekiel 12 · Grade 5

Every Vision Fulfilled

Name Date

Read and Think

Ezekiel 12 opens with God's diagnosis of his people: they were a rebellious house, with eyes to see that did not see and ears to hear that did not hear. Words had not reached them, so God turned Ezekiel into a living drama. It may be they will consider, God said, though they are a rebellious house. Even here, God's patience hoped for a response.

In full view, Ezekiel brought out his baggage by day. At evening he dug through the wall, shouldered the bundle in the dark, and covered his face so he would not see the land. When the people asked what he was doing, God gave the meaning. The burden concerned the prince in Jerusalem, who would try to escape through the wall at night, yet would be taken to Babylon. Many readers see this fulfilled in King Zedekiah, as 2 Kings 25 records.

God then addressed two kinds of unbelief. Some used a proverb claiming that the days are prolonged and every vision fails, meaning the warnings never come true. Others said the visions were for times far off. To both God answered that none of his words would be deferred any more. The word he speaks will be performed. In the New Testament, 2 Peter 3:9 says: The Lord is not slow concerning his promise, as some count slowness; but he is patient with us.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did God use an acted-out sign instead of only words?

  2. How do many readers see the sign fulfilled?

  3. What two kinds of unbelief did God answer?

  4. What does 2 Peter 3:9 say about God's timing?
