Hail from the Sky

Name Date

Read the Story

Pharaoh still would not obey. So God made the Egyptians' animals sick, and many died. But God's people's animals stayed healthy. Not one died!

Next, Moses threw ashes into the air. Painful sores called boils came on the Egyptians and their animals.

Then God sent a huge hailstorm with thunder and lightning. God warned the Egyptians to bring their animals inside. Some listened, and some did not. The hail broke trees and plants. But there was no hail where God's people lived. Pharaoh said, I have sinned, but when the hail stopped, he would not let them go.

Memory Verse

Moses said to him, “As soon as I have gone out of the city, I will spread out my hands to Yahweh. The thunders shall cease, and there will not be any more hail; that you may know that the earth is Yahweh’s.

The Earth Is Yahweh's

Name Date

Read the Story

Yahweh sent a severe disease on Egypt's livestock in the field: horses, donkeys, camels, herds and flocks. Yahweh made a distinction, and not one animal of Israel died. Pharaoh sent and checked, but his heart was stubborn. Then Moses threw handfuls of ashes from a furnace toward the sky, and boils broke out on people and animals. The magicians couldn't stand before Moses because of the boils.

God told Pharaoh, For this cause I have made you stand: to show you my power, and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth. God warned of very grievous hail and told the Egyptians to bring their servants and livestock inside. Whoever feared Yahweh's word made them flee into the houses. Whoever didn't respect His word left them in the field.

Moses stretched out his rod, and Yahweh sent thunder, hail and fire. The hail struck people, animals, plants and trees, but in Goshen there was no hail. Pharaoh said, I have sinned this time. Yahweh is righteous, and I and my people are wicked. Moses said, I will spread out my hands to Yahweh. The thunders shall cease, and there will not be any more hail; that you may know that the earth is Yahweh's. But when the hail stopped, Pharaoh sinned again and hardened his heart.

Memory Verse

Moses said to him, “As soon as I have gone out of the city, I will spread out my hands to Yahweh. The thunders shall cease, and there will not be any more hail; that you may know that the earth is Yahweh’s.

Fearing God's Word

Name Date

Read and Think

The plagues became more serious. God struck the Egyptians' livestock and then sent boils on people. Egypt's magicians, who once copied God's signs, could not even stand before Moses.

Before the hail, God mercifully gave a warning. Some Egyptians feared God's word and protected their servants and animals. God's mercy was offered even to Egyptians who would listen.

Pharaoh admitted, I have sinned, but he didn't truly change. When the trouble stopped, he sinned again. Moses said the purpose was that you may know that the earth is Yahweh's.

Show What You Know

  1. What happened to the magicians?

  2. How did God show mercy before the hail?

  3. Did Pharaoh truly change?

  4. What was the purpose of the hail stopping?

Think About It

  1. Some Egyptians believed God's warning. What does this show about God's mercy to all people?

  2. Psalm 24:1 says the earth is the Lord's. How should that change how you treat creation and your things?

Memory Verse

Moses said to him, “As soon as I have gone out of the city, I will spread out my hands to Yahweh. The thunders shall cease, and there will not be any more hail; that you may know that the earth is Yahweh’s.

Exodus 9 · Grade 5

God's Name Declared

Name Date

Read and Think

The fifth, sixth and seventh plagues intensify God's judgment. The plague on livestock struck animals Egyptians valued, yet God again distinguished His people: of the livestock of the children of Israel, not one died. The boils came from ashes of the furnace, which Moses threw into the air (9:8-10). The magicians, defeated, disappear from the story.

Before the hail, God declares His purpose to Pharaoh: For this cause I have made you stand: to show you my power, and that my name may be declared throughout all the earth. Paul quotes this in Romans 9:17. God's purpose was global: the whole world would hear of Yahweh. Even here, God offers mercy, telling the Egyptians how to protect their servants and livestock. Some Egyptians feared Yahweh's word, and they were spared.

Pharaoh's confession sounds right: I have sinned this time. Yahweh is righteous, and I and my people are wicked. But Moses discerns, I know that you don't yet fear Yahweh God. When the storm passes, Pharaoh sinned yet more, and hardened his heart. Words of confession without a changed heart are empty. True repentance turns away from sin and toward God.

Show What You Know

  1. How did God distinguish His people in the livestock plague?

  2. What might the furnace ashes recall?

  3. What was God's global purpose (Romans 9:17)?

  4. How did God show mercy before the hail?

  5. Why was Pharaoh's confession empty?
