The River Turns Red

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh. Aaron threw down his rod, and it became a snake. Pharaoh's magicians made their rods turn into snakes too. But Aaron's rod swallowed up their rods! Pharaoh still would not listen.

God told Moses to meet Pharaoh at the river. Aaron held out his rod and hit the water. All the water in the river turned to blood!

The fish died, and no one could drink the water. This was the first plague. A plague is a big trouble sent by God. Pharaoh still would not let God's people go. His heart was hard.

Memory Verse

The Egyptians shall know that I am Yahweh when I stretch out my hand on Egypt, and bring the children of Israel out from among them.”

Exodus 7:5 (WEB)

The Nile Struck

Name Date

Read the Story

God said, Behold, I have made you as God to Pharaoh; and Aaron your brother shall be your prophet. God said he would multiply his signs and wonders, and the Egyptians would know that he is Yahweh. Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three. Moses and Aaron did as Yahweh commanded.

Aaron cast down his rod before Pharaoh, and it became a serpent. Pharaoh's wise men and magicians did the same with their secret arts. But Aaron's rod swallowed up their rods. Yet Pharaoh's heart was hardened.

In the morning Moses met Pharaoh at the river. Aaron stretched out the rod and struck the water, and all the water turned to blood. The fish died, the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink from it. The magicians did the same with their secret arts, so Pharaoh's heart was hardened and he didn't take it to heart. The Egyptians dug around the river for water. Seven days passed.

Memory Verse

The Egyptians shall know that I am Yahweh when I stretch out my hand on Egypt, and bring the children of Israel out from among them.”

So They Will Know

Name Date

Read and Think

God said the plagues would happen so that the Egyptians would know He is Yahweh. The plagues were not random disasters. They showed God's power and judgment.

Pharaoh's magicians could copy some signs, but Aaron's rod swallowed theirs. God's power is always greater than false powers.

When God turned the Nile to blood, He showed He is Lord over the Nile and all creation. Pharaoh still hardened his heart.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did God send the plagues?

  2. What did Aaron's rod swallowing the others show?

  3. What did turning the Nile to blood show about Pharaoh's power?

  4. What did Pharaoh do after the Nile turned to blood?

Think About It

  1. Pharaoh saw God's power but refused to listen. Why is it dangerous to harden your heart?

  2. What false gods do people trust today instead of the true God?

The Egyptians shall know that I am Yahweh when I stretch out my hand on Egypt, and bring the children of Israel out from among them.”

Exodus 7 · Grade 5

The Hardened Heart

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 7 begins the ten plagues, God's judgments on Egypt. God states His purpose plainly: The Egyptians shall know that I am Yahweh. The plagues are a contest between Yahweh and the gods of Egypt (12:12). The first plague strikes the Nile, Egypt's lifeline. Ironically, the river where Hebrew baby boys had been thrown now runs with blood.

The theme of Pharaoh's hardened heart runs through these chapters. Sometimes the text says Pharaoh hardened his own heart (8:15), sometimes his heart was hardened, and sometimes God hardened it (9:12). Both are true: Pharaoh freely and repeatedly refused God, and God, in judgment, confirmed Pharaoh in the choice he had made. Romans 9:17 cites this to show God's sovereignty.

Egypt's magicians imitate the first signs with their enchantments, but they are limited. They can make more blood, but they cannot remove it. Aaron's rod swallowing theirs foreshadows the outcome of the whole contest. Satan's counterfeits may imitate, but they cannot overcome God. Moses and Aaron show the right response: As Yahweh commanded them, so they did.

Show What You Know

  1. What was the purpose of the plagues?

  2. What irony is there in the first plague?

  3. How do the two sides of Pharaoh's hardening fit together?

  4. What were the magicians' limits?

  5. How did Moses and Aaron respond to God?

  1. In the New Testament, Hebrews 3:15 warns us not to harden our hearts when we hear God's voice. How can you keep a soft heart toward God?

  2. How does God's power over false gods encourage you?
