God Makes Promises

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses was sad because things had gotten worse. But God said, Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh.

God said, I am Yahweh. He said he had made a promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He heard his people crying, and he would set them free, make them his people, be their God, and bring them to the land he promised.

Moses told the people God's promises. But they were so tired and sad that they would not listen. Still, God was going to keep every promise.

The Lord Keeps His Word

Name Date

Read the Story

Yahweh said to Moses, Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh, for by a strong hand he shall let them go. God said, I am Yahweh. He reminded Moses that he had appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty and made a covenant to give them Canaan. He said, I have remembered my covenant.

God gave Moses a message for Israel: he would bring them out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, free them, and redeem them. He said, I will take you to myself for a people. I will be your God. He would bring them into the land he promised.

Moses told this to Israel, but they didn't listen because of their anguish of spirit and cruel bondage. Moses asked how Pharaoh would listen to him when Israel had not listened. The chapter then lists the heads of families of Reuben, Simeon and Levi, including Amram and Jochebed, the parents of Aaron and Moses.

Memory Verse

“Moreover I have heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in bondage, and I have remembered my covenant.”

God Promises

Name Date

Read and Think

God answered Moses' sad prayer with promises. Again and again God said, I will. God's rescue did not depend on Moses or the people being strong. It depended on God.

God promised to redeem His people. To redeem means to buy back or set free at a price. God would free Israel by His mighty power.

The greatest promise was I will take you to myself for a people. I will be your God. God didn't just want to free Israel; He wanted a close relationship with them.

Show What You Know

  1. What words did God repeat again and again?

  2. What did God's rescue depend on?

  3. What does redeem mean?

Exodus 6 · Grade 5

The Covenant Name

Name Date

Read and Think

After Moses' lament, God responds with a powerful self-revelation. He reminds Moses that the patriarchs knew Him as El Shaddai, God Almighty, but now He will make Himself known by His name Yahweh in a new way. The patriarchs used the name, but they had not experienced its full meaning as Israel would through God's mighty acts of redemption.

God's speech is framed by I am Yahweh and contains seven great I will promises: bring you out, rid you of bondage, redeem you, take you as a people, be your God, bring you into the land, and give it to you. The heart of the covenant is I will take you to myself for a people. I will be your God, a phrase repeated throughout Scripture until its final fulfillment in Revelation 21:3.

The people cannot listen for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage. Suffering can make it hard to believe God's promises, but God's faithfulness doesn't depend on our feelings. The genealogy that follows may seem dull, but it roots Moses and Aaron in real history and in the tribe of Levi. God works through real families and real people to accomplish His plan.

Show What You Know

  1. What name did the patriarchs know God by?

  2. In what sense was God now making His name Yahweh known?

  3. What is the heart of the covenant?

  4. Where is this covenant phrase finally fulfilled?

  5. Why is the genealogy included?
