The Covenant Name

Name Date

Read and Think

After Moses' lament, God responds with a powerful self-revelation. He reminds Moses that the patriarchs knew Him as El Shaddai, God Almighty, but now He will make Himself known by His name Yahweh in a new way. The patriarchs used the name, but they had not experienced its full meaning as Israel would through God's mighty acts of redemption.

God's speech is framed by I am Yahweh and contains seven great I will promises: bring you out, rid you of bondage, redeem you, take you as a people, be your God, bring you into the land, and give it to you. The heart of the covenant is I will take you to myself for a people. I will be your God, a phrase repeated throughout Scripture until its final fulfillment in Revelation 21:3.

The people cannot listen for anguish of spirit, and for cruel bondage. Suffering can make it hard to believe God's promises, but God's faithfulness doesn't depend on our feelings. The genealogy that follows may seem dull, but it roots Moses and Aaron in real history and in the tribe of Levi. God works through real families and real people to accomplish His plan.
