Pharaoh Says No

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses and Aaron went to see Pharaoh. They told Pharaoh that God said to let his people go. Pharaoh said he did not know God and would not let Israel go.

Pharaoh got angry. He said not to give the slaves straw to make bricks. They had to find their own straw, but still make just as many bricks!

The work got much harder. The people were upset with Moses and Aaron. Moses felt sad. He went and talked to God about it. Moses knew he could bring his troubles to God.

Memory Verse

Afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said to Pharaoh, “This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.’”

Exodus 5 · Grade 3

Who Is Yahweh?

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness. Pharaoh said, Who is Yahweh, that I should listen to his voice to let Israel go? I don't know Yahweh, and moreover I will not let Israel go.

That same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters, You shall no longer give the people straw to make brick, as before. Let them go and gather straw for themselves. He still required the same number of bricks. He called them lazy. So the people scattered through Egypt to gather stubble. The Israelite officers were beaten because the work was not finished.

The officers complained to Pharaoh, but he said, You are idle! When they met Moses and Aaron, they blamed them. Moses returned to Yahweh and asked why God had brought trouble on this people and why he had sent Moses. Since Moses came to Pharaoh, things had only gotten worse.

Memory Verse

Afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said to Pharaoh, “This is what Yahweh, the God of Israel, says, ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.’”

When Obeying Gets Hard

Name Date

Read and Think

Moses obeyed God, but things got worse instead of better. Pharaoh proudly said he didn't know Yahweh. Over the next chapters, God would show Pharaoh exactly who He is.

The people suffered more, and they blamed Moses. Sometimes when we do what is right, life gets harder for a while. That doesn't mean God has stopped caring.

Moses was honest with God about his confusion. He brought his questions directly to God. Prayer is the right place to bring our disappointments.

Exodus 5 · Grade 5

Things Get Worse

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 5 sets up the great conflict of the book. God's demand is clear: Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me. The goal of the exodus was not only freedom from slavery but freedom to worship. Pharaoh, whom Egyptians considered divine, sneers, Who is Yahweh? The plagues that follow answer that question for Egypt and for Israel: You shall know that I am Yahweh (6:7; 7:5).

Pharaoh responds by tightening his grip. Forcing slaves to gather straw while keeping the same brick quota was cruel and impossible. He tells the people that Moses' words are lies, trying to destroy their hope in God. Oppressors often try to keep people too busy and exhausted to listen to God's word.

The officers blame Moses, and Moses brings the pain to God in a lament: Why have you brought trouble on this people? Many psalms contain similar honest cries. God does not rebuke Moses here; in chapter 6 He answers with promises. The lesson is that obedience does not guarantee immediate success, but God's timing is perfect, and things often look darkest just before His deliverance.

Show What You Know

  1. What was the goal of the exodus besides freedom from slavery?

  2. How do the plagues answer Pharaoh's question?

  3. Why did Pharaoh increase the workload?

  4. What kind of prayer did Moses pray?

  5. How did God respond to Moses' lament?
