God Moves In

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Moses to set up his tent. Moses put the ark inside. He set up the table, the lamp and the altars. He did everything God told him.

Then a cloud covered the tent. God's glory filled it! It was so full of God's glory that Moses could not go in.

When the cloud lifted up, the people packed up and moved. When the cloud stayed, they stayed. There was a cloud over the tent by day and fire in it at night. God was with them on their whole trip.

Memory Verse

“Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and Yahweh’s glory filled the tabernacle.”

Exodus 40 · Grade 3

The Tabernacle Is Set Up

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Moses to set up the tabernacle on the first day of the first month. Moses set up the frames and spread the tent over it. He put the tablets in the ark and placed the mercy seat on top. He brought the ark in and hung the veil to cover it.

He put the table in the tent and set the bread on it. He put the lampstand across from the table and lit the lamps. He put the golden altar in front of the veil and burned sweet incense. He set the bronze altar at the door and the basin between the tent and the altar. He set up the court and the gate. Moses anointed everything and dressed Aaron and his sons as priests. So Moses finished the work.

Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle. Moses was not able to enter, because the cloud stayed on it. Whenever the cloud lifted, Israel set out on their journeys. If it did not lift, they did not set out. The cloud of the Lord was on the tabernacle by day and fire was in it by night, in the sight of all Israel.

Memory Verse

“For the cloud of Yahweh was on the tabernacle by day, and there was fire in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys.”

Exodus 40 · Grade 4

God Dwells with His People

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus began with Israel as slaves in Egypt. It ends with God living among them. God rescued His people so they could know Him and worship Him.

Moses could not enter because God's glory was so great. God is holy and awesome. Yet He chose to live among His people.

In the New Testament, John 1:14 says that the Word became flesh and lived among us. The word dwelt means tabernacled. Christians have read this as a picture of Jesus, God who came to live with us.

Exodus 40 · Grade 5

From Slavery to God's Glory

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 40 brings the book to its goal. Moses raises the tabernacle on the first day of the first month of the second year after leaving Egypt, almost a year after the Passover. Eight times the chapter repeats that Moses acted as Yahweh commanded him. He sets everything in its place, from the ark inside the veil to the gate of the court, and then Moses finished the work (40:33), echoing God finishing creation in Genesis 2:2.

Then the cloud covers the tent, and Yahweh's glory filled the tabernacle (40:34). The God who appeared on Sinai in fire and cloud now comes to dwell in the middle of the camp. Even Moses cannot enter. God's presence is a gift of grace, but His holiness still requires a mediator and a way of approach, which Leviticus will describe.

Exodus began with Israel enslaved to Pharaoh and ends with Israel serving the Lord in His presence. The Hebrew word for service links both ideas: they were freed from forced labor to serve the true King in worship. The guiding cloud shows that God will lead them throughout all their journeys. In the New Testament, John 1:14 says the Word lived among us. The Word tabernacled among us (John 1:14), believers become God's temple (1 Corinthians 3:16), and at last God's dwelling is with people forever (Revelation 21:3).

Show What You Know

  1. How many times does Exodus 40 repeat that Moses acted as Yahweh commanded?

  2. How does Moses finished the work echo creation?

  3. Why could Moses not enter the tabernacle?

  4. How does the Hebrew word for service connect the beginning and end of Exodus?

  5. Name one New Testament fulfillment of God dwelling with His people.
