Moses Asks God to Send Someone Else

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses was worried. He worried that the people would not believe him. God asked, What is that in your hand? Moses said, A rod. God said, Throw it on the ground. It became a snake! When Moses picked it up by the tail, it became a rod again.

Then Moses said he was not good at talking. God said he made Moses' mouth, and he would help him speak. But Moses said, Please send someone else.

God was not pleased, but He sent Moses' brother Aaron to help. Aaron would speak for Moses. Moses and Aaron told God's people what God said. The people believed, and they bowed down and worshiped God.

Who Made Man's Mouth?

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses said, They will not believe me. God gave him three signs. His rod became a snake and then a rod again. His hand became leprous, white as snow, and then was healed. And if they still didn't believe, water from the river would become blood on dry ground.

Moses said, O Lord, I am not eloquent. He added, I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue. Yahweh said, Who made man's mouth? He added, Isn't it I, Yahweh? Then He said, Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth, and teach you what you shall speak. Moses said, Oh, Lord, please send someone else. God's anger burned against Moses, but He said Aaron would be his spokesman.

Moses took his wife and sons and returned toward Egypt with the rod of God in his hand. God told Moses that Pharaoh would refuse, and that Israel was God's firstborn son. Aaron met Moses at the mountain of God. They gathered the elders, Aaron spoke God's words, and Moses did the signs. The people believed, and when they heard that God had seen their affliction, they bowed their heads and worshiped.

Memory Verse

Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth, and teach you what you shall speak.”

God Uses Weak People

Name Date

Read and Think

Moses made excuse after excuse. He felt weak and not good enough. God was patient and gave him signs to show His power.

God reminded Moses that He made every mouth. Our abilities and weaknesses are in God's hands. God doesn't need us to be strong; He promises to be with us.

When Moses still refused, God was displeased. God wants us to trust and obey, not keep making excuses. Yet God graciously gave Aaron to help. God often sends others to help us do what He asks.

Show What You Know

  1. What did God give Moses to show His power?

  2. What did God remind Moses about mouths?

  3. How did God respond when Moses refused again?

  4. What does God want from us when He calls?

Exodus 4 · Grade 5

Excuses and God's Patience

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 3-4 records five objections from Moses. He asked who he was to go, asked for God's name, worried that the people would not believe, said that he was not eloquent, and asked God to send someone else. God answers each with patience. The signs of the staff, the leprous hand and the water turned to blood show God's power over creation, disease and even the Nile.

God's reply to Moses' fear of speaking is profound: Who made man's mouth? Or who makes one mute, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Isn't it I, Yahweh? God is sovereign over every ability and disability, and He can work through any weakness. But Moses' final plea, Please send someone else, is not humility but reluctance, and God's anger burns. Even so, God provides Aaron.

On the journey, God calls Israel my firstborn, a precious title. A brief and mysterious episode follows (4:24-26) in which Moses' son had not received the covenant sign of circumcision; Zipporah performs it, and Moses is spared. The leader of God's people needed to obey God's covenant in his own home. The chapter ends with joy: the elders believe, and when they hear that Yahweh has visited them and seen their affliction, they bow and worship.

Show What You Know

  1. What were Moses' five objections?

  2. What did the water turned to blood show?

  3. What does God's question about the mouth teach?

  4. Why did God's anger burn?

  5. What did the episode in 4:24-26 teach about leadership?
