Exodus 39 · Grade 5

Holiness Worn and Work Completed

Read and Think

Exodus 39 describes the making of Aaron's garments, following chapter 28. The phrase as Yahweh commanded Moses occurs seven times in the account of the garments, and the chapter closes with several more echoes. Seven is often a number of completeness in Scripture, and the pattern highlights Israel's full obedience after the failure of the golden calf.

The gold plate on the turban read HOLY TO YAHWEH (39:30). Aaron carried the holiness of Israel's worship on his forehead, bearing the guilt of their holy things (28:38). In the New Testament, the church is called a holy priesthood (1 Peter 2:5), and Zechariah foresaw a day when even the bells of horses would read HOLY TO YAHWEH (Zechariah 14:20). All of life is meant to belong to God.

The chapter ends like a creation scene. Just as God saw all that He had made (Genesis 1:31), finished His work (Genesis 2:2) and blessed (Genesis 2:3), so Moses saw all the work, saw it was done as commanded, and blessed the people (39:43). The tabernacle is a small picture of a restored world where God dwells with His people, pointing toward the new creation of Revelation 21:3.
