Exodus 38 · Grade 3

The Court of the Tabernacle

Name Date

Read the Story

Bezalel made the altar of burnt offering of acacia wood, covered with bronze. It had horns on its four corners. He made its pots, shovels, basins and forks of bronze, and a bronze grating, with rings and poles to carry it.

He made the basin of bronze and its stand from the mirrors of the women who served at the door of the Tent of Meeting. Mirrors then were made of shiny bronze.

He made the court with hangings of fine twined linen, a hundred cubits long on the north and south sides. The pillars had bronze bases and silver hooks. The gate had a screen of blue, purple and scarlet yarn. Ithamar the priest counted all the gold, silver and bronze that was given. Bezalel of Judah made all that the Lord commanded Moses, and Oholiab of Dan helped him.

“He made the basin of bronze, and its base of bronze, out of the mirrors of the ministering women who ministered at the door of the Tent of Meeting.”

Exodus 38 · Grade 4

Giving Up for God

Name Date

Read and Think

The women gave their mirrors to make the washing basin. They gave up something they used every day for God's house. Giving to God sometimes means giving up something we like.

The altar stood near the gate. To come to God, people first came to the altar of sacrifice. The way to God has always been through sacrifice for sin.

Every gift was counted carefully. God's people should handle money for God's work honestly. In the New Testament, Jesus said that whoever is faithful in little is faithful in much (Luke 16:10).

Show What You Know

  1. What did the women give up?

  2. Why was the altar placed near the gate?

  3. Why were the gifts counted carefully?

  4. What did Jesus say in Luke 16:10?

Exodus 38 · Grade 5

Bronze, Linen and an Honest Account

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 38 completes the furniture of the courtyard. The bronze altar of burnt offering was the first thing a worshiper met after entering the gate. Every approach to God passed by the place of sacrifice. In the New Testament, Hebrews 13:10 says believers have an altar, pointing to the cross of Christ.

The basin came from the mirrors of the ministering women (38:8). These women served at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. Their sacrifice of personal items turned a tool for looking at oneself into a tool for cleansing before God. This small detail honors women's service in Israel's worship.

The chapter ends with an inventory: about twenty-nine talents of gold, a hundred talents of silver and seventy talents of bronze. The silver came from the half shekel paid by every counted man (30:13). The careful accounting, overseen by Ithamar, shows integrity in handling sacred gifts. Paul likewise took care to be honorable not only in the Lord's sight, but also in the sight of people (2 Corinthians 8:21).

Show What You Know

  1. What did a worshiper meet first after entering the gate?

  2. What does Hebrews 13:10 point to?

  3. What does the basin made from mirrors show?

  4. Where did the silver come from?

  5. What does the careful accounting show?
