Read and Think

Bezalel made everything just as God had shown Moses. Obeying God carefully matters, even in small details.

Each piece pointed to God. The ark showed His throne. The bread showed He feeds His people. The lamp showed He is light.

Christians have read these as pictures of Jesus. He is the Bread of Life (John 6:35) and the Light of the World (John 8:12). Through Him we come to God's mercy seat.

  1. How did Bezalel make everything?

  2. What did the ark show?

  3. What does Jesus call Himself in John 6:35?

  4. What does Jesus call Himself in John 8:12?

Exodus 37 · Grade 5

Craftsmanship for God's Throne Room

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 37 records Bezalel making the furniture of the holy place and the most holy place, following chapter 25 closely. Bezalel himself is named as maker of the ark, the most sacred object. The details of acacia wood, pure gold, rings and poles are repeated because faithful obedience is worth recording.

The mercy seat with its two cherubim formed the throne of the invisible God. Here the blood of atonement would be sprinkled on the Day of Atonement. The cherubim looked down toward the mercy seat, as if gazing at the place where sin is covered. In the New Testament, Romans 3:25 uses the same Greek word for mercy seat to describe Christ as the place of atonement.

The table, lampstand and incense altar furnished the holy place, where priests served daily. Bread, light and prayer marked Israel's ongoing fellowship with God. The anointing oil and incense were made after the art of the perfumer (37:29), joining beauty and holiness. Worship engages every sense and every skill.

Show What You Know

  1. Why are the details repeated from chapter 25?

  2. What did the mercy seat with its cherubim represent?

  3. How does Romans 3:25 connect the mercy seat to Christ?

  4. What three things marked Israel's daily fellowship with God in the holy place?

  5. What does after the art of the perfumer show?
