Exodus 37 · Grade 5
Craftsmanship for God's Throne Room
Read and Think
Exodus 37 records Bezalel making the furniture of the holy place and the most holy place, following chapter 25 closely. Bezalel himself is named as maker of the ark, the most sacred object. The details of acacia wood, pure gold, rings and poles are repeated because faithful obedience is worth recording.
The mercy seat with its two cherubim formed the throne of the invisible God. Here the blood of atonement would be sprinkled on the Day of Atonement. The cherubim looked down toward the mercy seat, as if gazing at the place where sin is covered. In the New Testament, Romans 3:25 uses the same Greek word for mercy seat to describe Christ as the place of atonement.
The table, lampstand and incense altar furnished the holy place, where priests served daily. Bread, light and prayer marked Israel's ongoing fellowship with God. The anointing oil and incense were made after the art of the perfumer (37:29), joining beauty and holiness. Worship engages every sense and every skill.
