Please Stop Bringing!

Name Date

Read the Story

Bezalel and Oholiab and the other skilled workers began to build God's tent. Every morning the people brought more gifts.

The workers came to Moses. They said the people were bringing much more than they needed! So Moses sent a message through the camp to stop bringing gifts. The people stopped bringing gifts. They had more than enough!

The workers made big curtains with angels sewn on them. They made boards of wood covered with gold. They made a beautiful veil, too.

Exodus 36 · Grade 3

The Work Begins

Name Date

Read the Story

Bezalel and Oholiab came to do the work. So did every person God had made skillful. Moses gave them the gifts the people had brought. But the people kept bringing more gifts every morning.

All the wise men who were doing the work came to Moses. They said, The people have brought much more than enough for the service of the work which Yahweh commanded to make. So Moses gave an order. It was announced in the camp: Let neither man nor woman make anything else for the offering for the sanctuary. So the people were held back from bringing. What they had was enough for all the work, and too much.

The workers made ten curtains of fine linen. They used blue, purple and red yarn and sewed cherubim into them. They made curtains of goats' hair for a tent over the tabernacle. They made covers of skins. They made wood frames covered with gold. The frames stood on silver bases. They also made the veil with cherubim. It hung on four gold-covered pillars.

Memory Verse

They spoke to Moses, saying, “The people have brought much more than enough for the service of the work which Yahweh commanded to make.”

Overflowing Generosity

Name Date

Read and Think

The people gave so much that they had to be told to stop. That is rare! When hearts are full of thankfulness, giving overflows.

The workers were honest. They could have kept the extra, but they told Moses the truth. God's work should be done with honesty.

God gave more than enough grace to His people. Ephesians 3:20 says God is able to do far more than all we ask or think.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did the people have to be told to stop?

  2. How did the workers show honesty?

  3. What happens when hearts are full of thankfulness?

  4. What does Ephesians 3:20 say God is able to do?

Think About It

  1. What makes a person want to give generously?

  2. Why is honesty important in doing God's work?

Memory Verse

Exodus 36 · Grade 5

Restrained from Giving

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 36 opens with the craftsmen beginning their work, using the offerings Moses gave them. Yet the people kept bringing freewill offerings every morning (36:3). Their generosity was so great that the skilled workers stopped their labor to report, The people have brought much more than enough (36:5). It is one of the few times in Scripture that God's people had to be told to stop giving.

The contrast with chapter 32 is striking. Then the people gave gold eagerly for an idol. Now, forgiven and restored, they give even more eagerly for the worship of the true God. Grace received produces generosity. Paul describes the Macedonian churches in a similar way: out of deep poverty they gave beyond their ability because they first gave themselves to the Lord (2 Corinthians 8:2-5).

The rest of the chapter records the making of the curtains, coverings, frames and veil, repeating chapter 26. The repetition is not filler. It shows that every instruction from God was carried out exactly. The craftsmen's honesty is also notable. Rather than keep a surplus, they reported it. Faithful stewardship means using resources for their intended purpose and being open about them.

Show What You Know

  1. How often did the people keep bringing offerings?

  2. What is unusual about this event in Scripture?

  3. How does this chapter contrast with chapter 32?

  4. What did the Macedonian churches first give, according to 2 Corinthians 8:5?

  5. What does the craftsmen's report show about stewardship?
