Exodus 35 · Grade 3

Gifts from Stirred Hearts

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses gathered all the people. He said, Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be a holy day for you, a Sabbath of solemn rest to Yahweh. Then he said, Take from among you an offering to Yahweh. Whoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it.

Everyone whose heart stirred him came. Men and women brought bracelets, earrings, rings and gold. Others brought blue, purple and red yarn, fine linen, skins and acacia wood. Women with skill spun yarn with their hands. Some spun goats' hair. The leaders brought onyx stones and jewels for the ephod and breastplate, plus spices and oil.

Moses said, Behold, Yahweh has called by name Bezalel. He said God had filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom and skill, and had put it in his heart to teach, both him and Oholiab. All the people of Israel, men and women, brought a freewill offering to the Lord.

Memory Verse

“They came, everyone whose heart stirred him up, and everyone whom his spirit made willing, and brought Yahweh’s offering for the work of the Tent of Meeting, and for all of its service, and for the holy garments.”

Cheerful, Willing Givers

Name Date

Read and Think

After the golden calf, the people gave their gold again, this time for the true God. God can turn us from wrong worship to right worship.

No one was forced to give. The offering came from willing hearts. Second Corinthians 9:7 says that God loves a cheerful giver.

Everyone had something to bring. Some gave gold, some gave skill and some gave time. Men and women, leaders and workers all helped build God's house.

Show What You Know

  1. How was this gift of gold different from the golden calf?

  2. Were the people forced to give?

  3. What does 2 Corinthians 9:7 say God loves?

Exodus 35 · Grade 5

A Freewill Offering

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 35 begins the record of Israel actually building the tabernacle. Much of chapters 35 to 40 repeats chapters 25 to 31, almost word for word. The repetition shows that Israel did exactly what God commanded. After the golden calf, this obedience is a sign of restored fellowship.

Moses begins with the Sabbath. Even work on God's house must pause for rest. Then he invites a freewill offering from whoever is of a willing heart (35:5). The text repeats words like heart, stirred and willing. The same people who once gave gold for an idol now give gold for the dwelling of the living God.

Everyone participates. Women spin yarn and goats' hair; leaders donate precious stones; skilled workers give their craft. Bezalel and Oholiab are not only gifted to work but also to teach (35:34). Their skill is meant to multiply in others. In the New Testament, Christ gives gifts to prepare his people for serving and building up the body (Ephesians 4:12).

Show What You Know

  1. Why do chapters 35 to 40 repeat so much of chapters 25 to 31?

  2. Why does Moses begin with the Sabbath?

  3. What words are repeated to describe the givers?

  4. What was special about Bezalel and Oholiab besides their skill?

  5. According to Ephesians 4:12, why does Christ give gifts?
