God passed by and said His name. He said that he is kind and good, slow to get angry, full of love, and he forgives sin. Moses quickly bowed down and worshiped God.

Moses stayed with God forty days and forty nights. God wrote the Ten Commandments again. When Moses came down, his face was shining because he had been with God!

God Proclaims His Name

Name Date

Read the Story

God said, Chisel two stone tablets like the first. I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. Early in the morning Moses went up Mount Sinai with the two tablets in his hand.

The Lord came down in the cloud and stood with him. He passed before Moses and proclaimed, Yahweh! Yahweh, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness and truth. God forgives sin, but he does not ignore guilt. Moses hurried and bowed his head to the ground and worshiped. He asked the Lord to go among them, forgive their sin, and take them as his own.

God said, Behold, I make a covenant. He promised to do wonders. He warned them not to worship any other god, for He is a jealous God. Moses stayed there forty days and forty nights. He did not eat bread or drink water. The Ten Commandments were written on the tablets. When Moses came down, his face shone because he had talked with God. The people were afraid to come near. So when Moses finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face.

Memory Verse

“He was there with Yahweh forty days and forty nights; he neither ate bread, nor drank water. He wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.”

Merciful and Gracious

Name Date

Read and Think

After Israel's great sin, God gave them a second chance. He told Moses to cut new tablets. God's covenant was renewed because of His mercy, not because the people deserved it.

God described Himself as merciful, gracious, slow to anger and full of steadfast love and faithfulness. This description is repeated many times in the Bible (Psalm 103:8; Jonah 4:2). It tells us who God really is.

Moses' face shone after being with God. Second Corinthians 3:18 says that as we look to the Lord, we are changed to become more like Him. Time with God changes us.

Show What You Know

  1. Why was the covenant renewed?

  2. Name three ways God described Himself.

  3. Where else is this description repeated?

  4. What does 2 Corinthians 3:18 say happens as we look to the Lord?

Think About It

  1. Which part of God's description of Himself means the most to you today? Why?

  2. How does spending time with God change the way you act?

Memory Verse

“When Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the covenant in Moses’ hand, when he came down from the mountain, Moses didn’t know that the skin of his face shone by reason of his speaking with him.”

Exodus 34 · Grade 5

The Name of the Lord

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 34 is a chapter of restoration. God commands Moses to cut new tablets, and He Himself writes the same covenant words again. The broken covenant is renewed not because Israel has improved, but because of God's character. When Moses asked to see God's glory (33:18), God answered by proclaiming His name.

Yahweh! Yahweh, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness and truth, keeping loving kindness for thousands, forgiving iniquity and disobedience and sin; and who will by no means clear the guilty (34:6-7). This is one of the most quoted passages in the Old Testament (Numbers 14:18; Nehemiah 9:17; Psalm 86:15; Joel 2:13). It holds together God's overflowing mercy and His perfect justice. Christians have read this as meeting at the cross, where God is just and also forgives (Romans 3:26).

God renews the covenant with promises of wonders and warnings against idolatry, for His name is Jealous (34:14). This is not petty envy, but the rightful love of a husband for his bride. Moses' forty days of fasting and his shining face show the effect of being near God's glory. In the New Testament, Paul explains that Moses' veil hid a fading glory, but in Christ the veil is removed, and believers with unveiled faces are transformed from glory to glory (2 Corinthians 3:7-18).

Show What You Know

  1. Why was the covenant renewed?

  2. How did God answer Moses' request to see His glory?

  3. Name two other passages that quote 34:6-7.

  4. How does the cross hold together God's mercy and justice?

  5. How does Paul contrast Moses' veil with life in Christ?

Think About It

  1. Why do you think God answered Moses' request to see His glory with words about His character?

  2. What does God's jealous love for His people teach you about how much He cares for you?

Memory Verse

He said, “Behold, I make a covenant: before all your people I will do marvels, such as have not been worked in all the earth, nor in any nation; and all the people among whom you are shall see the work of Yahweh; for it is an awesome thing that I do with you.
