Exodus 32 · Grade 2

A Gold Calf

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses was on the mountain with God for a long time. The people got tired of waiting. They asked Aaron to make them a god. Aaron took their gold earrings and made a gold calf. The people bowed down to it. That was a big sin.

God saw what they did. Moses prayed and asked God not to destroy His people. God listened to Moses.

Moses came down the mountain. He saw the calf and the people dancing. He was so upset that he threw down the stone tablets, and they broke. Moses burned the calf. Then Moses went back to God and prayed that God would forgive their sin.

Memory Verse

“The tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.”

Moses Stands in the Gap

Name Date

Read the Story

The people saw that Moses was slow to come down from the mountain. They gathered around Aaron and said, Come, make us gods, which shall go before us. They said they did not know what had happened to Moses. Aaron told them to bring their gold earrings. He made a gold calf. The people said it was the god who brought them out of Egypt. They offered sacrifices to it, ate, drank and played.

God told Moses, Go, get down; for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves! Moses begged God to spare them. He asked God to remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, and his promises to them. And the Lord did not send the harm He had spoken of.

Moses came down carrying the tablets that God had written. When he saw the calf and the dancing, he was very angry. He threw the tablets down and broke them at the foot of the mountain. He burned the calf and ground it to powder. He asked Aaron, What did these people do to you, that you have brought a great sin on them? Aaron made excuses. The sin brought sad results that day. The next day Moses said, You have sinned a great sin. He said he would go up to Yahweh to seek forgiveness for them.

Memory Verse

On the next day, Moses said to the people, “You have sinned a great sin. Now I will go up to Yahweh. Perhaps I shall make atonement for your sin.”

Exodus 32 · Grade 4

Idols and Intercession

Name Date

Read and Think

Only weeks after promising to obey, Israel broke the first and second commandments. They grew impatient and made an idol they could see. An idol is anything we love or trust more than God.

Moses prayed for the people. He reminded God of His promises. Praying for others is called intercession. Moses even offered to be blotted out of God's book in their place.

Aaron blamed the people and made excuses. The sin brought serious consequences. But God listened to Moses' prayer. Christians have read this as a picture of Jesus, the greater Mediator. In the New Testament, 1 Timothy 2:5 calls Jesus the one mediator between God and people.

  2. What is an idol?

Exodus 32 · Grade 5

A Great Sin and a Great Intercessor

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 32 is one of the saddest chapters in Israel's history. While God is giving Moses the tablets and the plans for His dwelling, the people are breaking the covenant at the foot of the mountain. Impatient at Moses' delay, they demand gods which shall go before us. Aaron fashions a golden calf and declares a feast to Yahweh (32:5). They tried to worship the true God through an image, which God had forbidden only weeks before (20:4-5).

God tells Moses that the people are stiff-necked and that He will consume them and make a great nation from Moses. Moses intercedes, appealing to God's reputation among the Egyptians and to His covenant promises to Abraham, Isaac and Israel. So Yahweh turned away from the evil which he said he would do to his people (32:14). Scripture uses human language to show that God truly responds to prayer, while His purposes do not fail (Numbers 23:19).

Moses breaks the tablets, a vivid sign that the covenant has been broken, and destroys the calf. Aaron makes excuses, even claiming the calf just came out of the fire (32:24). The Levites side with Moses, and judgment falls on about three thousand people; a plague follows. This passage is hard to read, and it shows the seriousness of idolatry. Then Moses offers himself: Yet now, if you will, forgive their sin—and if not, please blot me out of your book which you have written. God says each person is responsible for their own sin. Moses could not take the people's place. In the New Testament, 2 Corinthians 5:21 says Jesus, who knew no sin, was made sin for us.

Show What You Know

  1. What was happening on the mountain while Israel made the calf?

  2. How did Israel's worship of the calf break God's command?

  3. On what grounds did Moses intercede?

  4. What did breaking the tablets signify?

  5. What could Moses not do that Jesus did?
