Idols and Intercession

Name Date

Read and Think

Only weeks after promising to obey, Israel broke the first and second commandments. They grew impatient and made an idol they could see. An idol is anything we love or trust more than God.

Moses prayed for the people. He reminded God of His promises. Praying for others is called intercession. Moses even offered to be blotted out of God's book in their place.

Aaron blamed the people and made excuses. The sin brought serious consequences. But God listened to Moses' prayer. Christians have read this as a picture of Jesus, the greater Mediator. In the New Testament, 1 Timothy 2:5 calls Jesus the one mediator between God and people.

Memory Verse

On the next day, Moses said to the people, “You have sinned a great sin. Now I will go up to Yahweh. Perhaps I shall make atonement for your sin.”

  • Who could you ask God to bring back to Him?
