Exodus 3 · Grade 3

God Sends Moses

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses was keeping the flock of Jethro, his father-in-law, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. The angel of Yahweh appeared to him in a flame of fire out of a bush. The bush burned, but it was not consumed. Moses turned aside to see. God called, Moses! Moses! and said, Take off your sandals, for the place you are standing on is holy ground. He said, I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Moses hid his face, afraid to look at God.

God said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt. He said he had come down to deliver them and bring them to a good and large land, flowing with milk and honey, and that he would send Moses to Pharaoh. Moses said, Who am I? God answered, Certainly I will be with you.

Moses asked what to tell the people if they asked God's name. God said, I AM WHO I AM. He told Moses to say that I AM had sent him. God told Moses to gather the elders and go to Pharaoh. God said Pharaoh would not let them go until God stretched out His hand with wonders. When Israel left, they would not go empty-handed.

Memory Verse

He said, “Certainly I will be with you. This will be the token to you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.”

The Great I AM

Name Date

Read and Think

God got Moses' attention with a bush that burned without burning up. God told Moses to take off his sandals because God's presence made the place holy. We should come to God with respect and awe.

God told Moses He had seen, heard and come down to help His people. God is not far away. He cares when His people suffer.

God's name, I AM WHO I AM, means God exists by Himself and never changes. He depends on nothing. In the New Testament, Jesus uses the same name, I AM, for Himself (John 8:58); Christians read this as showing that He is God.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did Moses take off his sandals?

  2. What three things did God say He had done for His people?

  3. What does the name I AM teach about God?

  4. What name did Jesus use for Himself in John 8:58?

Think About It

  1. Moses asked, Who am I? God said, I will be with you. How does that help when you feel too small for a task?

  2. How can you show respect and awe when you worship God?

Memory Verse

God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM,” and he said, “You shall tell the children of Israel this: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

Exodus 3 · Grade 5

Moses Asks, God Answers

Name Date

Read and Think

Forty years after fleeing Egypt (Acts 7:30), Moses is an ordinary shepherd at Horeb (Sinai). God draws him with a bush that burns but is not consumed. Fire often signals God's holy presence in Scripture, and the unconsumed bush may picture Israel, afflicted but not destroyed because God dwells with them. God's command to remove his sandals teaches that God is holy and must be approached with reverence.

God's speech overflows with compassion: I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters, for I know their sorrows. God identifies Himself as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, connecting this rescue to His covenant promises. In the New Testament, Jesus used this verse to teach about the resurrection: God is the God of the living (Mark 12:26-27).

Moses' first objection, Who am I?, is answered not by building up Moses but by God's promise: Certainly I will be with you. Moses' second question asks God's name. God answers, I AM WHO I AM, connected to the name Yahweh (often written LORD). This name reveals God as self-existent, eternal, unchanging and faithful. In the New Testament, Christians have read Jesus' I am sayings in John's Gospel, especially John 8:58, in light of this name.

Show What You Know

  1. What might the unconsumed bush picture?

  2. How did God show compassion in His speech?

  3. How did Jesus use this passage in Mark 12:26-27?

  4. How did God answer Moses' Who am I?

  5. What does the name I AM reveal about God?

Think About It

  1. God met Moses' weakness by staying with him. Where do you need to trust God's promise, Certainly I will be with you?

  2. How does knowing God never changes give you confidence?

Memory Verse

God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM,” and he said, “You shall tell the children of Israel this: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”
