Ready to Serve God

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Moses how to get Aaron and his sons ready to be priests. First Moses would wash them with water. Then he would dress them in their holy clothes.

Moses would pour special oil on Aaron's head. This showed that God chose him. Gifts were given to God on the altar. The priests were set apart for God for seven days.

Every morning and every evening, the priests would give a lamb to God. God said he would meet with his people there. He would live among them and be their God.

Exodus 29 · Grade 3

Washed, Dressed and Anointed

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Moses what to do to make Aaron and his sons holy, to serve him as priests. Moses would bring them to the door of the Tent of Meeting and wash them with water. He would put the holy clothes on Aaron. Then he would pour the anointing oil on Aaron's head.

Moses would offer a bull as a sin offering and rams as offerings to God. Some of the blood was put on the priests' right ear, right thumb and right big toe. This showed they must listen to God, work for God and walk with God. The priests would be set apart for seven days.

Every day there would be two lambs offered, one in the morning and one in the evening. God said, There I will meet with the children of Israel. He said, I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God. They would know that he is Yahweh their God, who brought them out of Egypt.

Memory Verse

“They shall know that I am Yahweh their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, that I might dwell among them: I am Yahweh their God.”

Exodus 29 · Grade 4

Made Holy to Serve

Name Date

Read and Think

Before the priests could serve, they had to be washed, dressed and anointed. God made them ready. We cannot make ourselves clean enough for God. In the New Testament, 1 John 1:7 says the blood of Jesus cleanses us from all sin.

Blood on the ear, thumb and toe showed that the whole person belonged to God: what they heard, what they did and where they went.

God said He brought Israel out of Egypt so that He could live among them. God's greatest goal is to be with His people. Revelation 21:3 says one day God will dwell with His people forever.

Show What You Know

  1. What three things were done to the priests before they served?

  2. How does God make us clean?

  3. What did blood on the ear, thumb and toe show?

  4. What does Revelation 21:3 promise?

Think About It

  1. How can your ears, hands and feet serve God this week?

  2. Why do you think God's greatest goal is to be with His people?

Memory Verse

“They shall know that I am Yahweh their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, that I might dwell among them: I am Yahweh their God.”

Exodus 29 · Grade 5

Consecration and Communion

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 29 describes the ordination of the priests. Over seven days Aaron and his sons were washed, clothed in holy garments and anointed with oil. Then came three sacrifices: a bull for a sin offering, a ram for a burnt offering wholly given to God, and a ram of consecration for ordination. The priests laid their hands on the animals' heads, showing that the animal stood in their place. Even those chosen to serve needed atonement first.

Blood from the ordination ram was placed on the priests' right ear, right thumb and right big toe. This marked the whole person, hearing, working and walking, as devoted to God. Portions of the offerings were waved before God and then eaten by the priests in a holy place, a meal of fellowship with God. Romans 12:1 calls believers to present their bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God.

The chapter closes with the daily offering of two lambs, morning and evening, and God's great promise: I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God. They shall know that I am Yahweh their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, that I might dwell among them (29:45-46). The exodus was not only freedom from slavery but freedom for fellowship with God. In the New Testament, Hebrews 10:11-14 explains that Christ offered one sacrifice for sins forever.

Show What You Know

  1. What three steps prepared the priests before sacrifice?

  2. What did laying hands on the animal show?

  3. What did blood on ear, thumb and toe symbolize?

  4. According to 29:46, why did God bring Israel out of Egypt?

  5. How does Hebrews 10 say Christ fulfills the daily offerings?
