God chose Aaron to be the high priest. A priest helped the people come to God. God told Moses to make special clothes for Aaron. They would be beautiful.

Aaron would wear a vest called an ephod. It had two stones on the shoulders with the names of Israel's family groups. Over his heart was a breastplate with twelve bright stones. Each stone had the name of one family group.

Aaron's robe was blue. Around the bottom were gold bells. On his head was a gold plate that said, HOLY TO YAHWEH. When Aaron went in to serve God, he carried God's people on his shoulders and his heart.

Names on His Heart

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Moses to bring Aaron and his sons to serve him as priests. Moses was to make holy garments for Aaron, for glory and for beauty. Skilled workers would make them.

The ephod was made of gold, blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen. On its shoulder straps were two onyx stones. The names of the twelve tribes were carved on them, six on each stone. The breastplate had four rows of three precious stones. Each stone had the name of a tribe. So Aaron would carry Israel's names on his heart when he went into the holy place.

The robe was all blue. Around its hem were pomegranates made of yarn and bells of gold. The bells would ring as Aaron served in the holy place. On his turban was a plate of pure gold. It said, HOLY TO YAHWEH. Aaron's sons would also wear coats, sashes and caps for glory and for beauty.

A Priest Who Carries Us

Name Date

Read and Think

A priest stood between God and the people. He offered sacrifices and prayed for them. Aaron's clothes showed how holy and important this job was.

Aaron carried the names of the tribes on his shoulders and over his heart. That showed he carried the people before God and cared for them.

In the New Testament, Hebrews 4:14-16 says Jesus is our great High Priest. He knows our weakness, and He prays for us. Because of Him, we can come boldly to God's throne of grace. First Peter 2:9 also calls believers a royal priesthood.

Show What You Know

  3. Who is our great High Priest?

Exodus 28 · Grade 5

Garments for Glory and Beauty

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 28 describes the garments of the high priest. Aaron and his sons were set apart to serve as priests, and their clothes were made for glory and for beauty (28:2). The ephod, woven of gold thread with blue, purple and scarlet, matched the colors of the tabernacle itself, showing that the priest belonged to God's house. Two onyx stones on the shoulders bore the names of the twelve tribes, for a memorial before God (28:12).

The breastpiece of judgment held twelve precious stones in four rows, each engraved with a tribe's name, on his heart (28:29). Inside it were the Urim and Thummim, used to seek God's will in important decisions. The blue robe had golden bells and pomegranates on its hem, so the sound would be heard when he served. The gold plate on his turban read HOLY TO YAHWEH, and through it Aaron would bear the iniquity of the holy things so the people's gifts would be accepted (28:38).

The priest represented the people before God, carrying them on his shoulders (strength) and heart (love). In the New Testament, Hebrews teaches that Jesus is a High Priest who always lives to pray for His people (Hebrews 7:25) and who, unlike Aaron, has no sin of His own. In the New Testament, believers are said to put on Christ (Galatians 3:27), and together they are called a royal priesthood (1 Peter 2:9).

Show What You Know

  1. Why did the ephod match the colors of the tabernacle?

  2. What was engraved on the onyx stones?

  3. What were the Urim and Thummim used for?

  4. What did the gold plate on the turban say?

  5. How is Jesus a better High Priest than Aaron?
