The Courtyard

Read the Story

God told Moses to make a big altar. It was made of wood covered with bronze. It had four horns, one on each corner. Gifts were given to God on the altar.

Around God's tent there was a big yard. It had a fence of white cloth hung on posts. There was only one gate. It was on the east side, and it was very colorful.

God told the people to bring pure olive oil for the lamp. The priests kept it burning all night long. God's light kept shining in His house.

One Way In

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Moses to make the altar of acacia wood, five cubits long and five cubits wide, with a horn on each corner, covered with bronze. It had pots, shovels, basins and a bronze grate. Poles went through rings so the priests could carry it. It was hollow, made just as God showed Moses.

God said, Make the court of the tabernacle. Hangings of fine white linen hung from pillars all around it. The court was one hundred cubits long and fifty cubits wide. On the east side was the gate. Its screen was made of blue, purple and scarlet yarn.

God told Moses to have the people bring pure olive oil for the light, so the lamp would burn always. Aaron and his sons would keep it in order from evening to morning before the Lord. This would be a rule forever for Israel.

Memory Verse

“You shall command the children of Israel, that they bring to you pure olive oil beaten for the light, to cause a lamp to burn continually.

The courtyard had only one gate. There was only one way in. In the New Testament, Jesus calls himself the door (John 10:9) and the way (John 14:6).

The lamp burned all through the night. God's people were to keep His light shining. In the New Testament, Jesus calls his followers the light of the world (Matthew 5:14).

Exodus 27 · Grade 5

Approaching a Holy God

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 27 moves from the inside of the tabernacle to the courtyard. The bronze altar of burnt offering was the largest piece of furniture, about seven and a half feet square. Its four horns were a place where blood was applied and where a person could seek refuge (1 Kings 1:50). Every worshiper had to pass the altar before going further. The message was clear: approach to God requires atonement for sin.

The courtyard was enclosed by white linen hangings about seven and a half feet high, with one gate on the east side made of blue, purple and scarlet. The white linen marked a boundary of holiness. The single entrance taught that God sets the terms of approach. Christians have read this as a picture of Jesus, who says in the New Testament that he is the way, the truth, and the life, and that no one comes to the Father except through him (John 14:6).

The chapter ends with the oil for the lamp. The people supplied pure beaten olive oil, and the priests kept the lamp burning from evening to morning before Yahweh (27:21). This continual light was a sign of God's ongoing presence and of Israel's ongoing service. In the New Testament, Hebrews 13:10-12 speaks of Christ's sacrifice, and Jesus calls His followers to let their light shine before others (Matthew 5:16).

Show What You Know

  1. Why did every worshiper pass the altar first?

  2. What were the horns of the altar used for?

  3. What did the single gate teach?

  4. Who supplied the oil and who tended the lamp?

  5. What does Hebrews 13:10-12 say about Christ?
