Curtains and Boards

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Moses how to make His tent. It was called the tabernacle. It had ten long curtains made of fine cloth. They were blue, purple and red. Pictures of angels were sewn on them.

Over the curtains went more covers made of goat hair and animal skins. These kept the tent safe from rain and sun. The walls were boards covered with gold. The boards stood in bases made of silver.

Inside, a special curtain called the veil made two rooms. The ark went in the most holy room. The table and lampstand went in the holy room. God told Moses to set it up just the way God showed him.

Memory Verse

“You shall set up the tabernacle according to the way that it was shown to you on the mountain.”

Exodus 26 · Grade 3

The Holy Place and the Most Holy Place

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Moses to make the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine linen in blue, purple, and scarlet, with cherubim woven into them by skilled workers. The curtains were joined with fifty gold clasps, so the tabernacle would be one whole tent.

Over it went a tent of goat hair, then a cover of rams' skins dyed red, and another fine leather cover on top. The walls were made of acacia boards covered with gold. Each board stood in two silver bases. Gold bars held the boards together.

God told Moses to make a veil of blue, purple, and scarlet with cherubim on it. It hung on four gold pillars. Behind the veil was the most holy place, where the ark would go. Outside the veil was the holy place. The table would stand on the north side and the lampstand on the south side. A colorful screen would hang at the door of the tent. God said, You shall set up the tabernacle according to the way that it was shown to you on the mountain.

Memory Verse

“You shall put the mercy seat on the ark of the covenant in the most holy place.”

Exodus 26 · Grade 4

The Veil

Name Date

Read and Think

The tabernacle was beautiful and carefully made. God cares about beauty and order. Every part was made exactly as God planned.

The veil separated the holy place from the most holy place. Only the high priest could go behind it, once a year. Sin keeps people away from a holy God.

In the New Testament, when Jesus died on the cross, the veil in the temple was torn in two from top to bottom (Matthew 27:51). Christians have read this as showing that through Jesus, the way to God is open. Hebrews 10:19-20 says we can enter with boldness by the new and living way He opened for us.

Show What You Know

  1. What does the tabernacle's beauty show about God?

  2. What did the veil separate?

  3. What happened to the temple veil when Jesus died?

  4. What does Hebrews 10:19-20 say we can do?

Exodus 26 · Grade 5

A Tent Fit for the King

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 26 describes the structure of the tabernacle. The inner layer was made of ten linen curtains in blue, purple and scarlet, with cherubim skillfully woven in. Looking up from inside, the priests would see a ceiling of heavenly beings, a reminder of God's throne. Fifty gold clasps made the curtains one tabernacle (26:6). Protective layers of goat hair, red-dyed rams' skins and fine leather covered the outside.

The frame was made of upright boards of acacia wood overlaid with gold, each set in two silver sockets, and held firm by bars. The tabernacle could be taken apart and carried, a portable dwelling for a God who traveled with His people through the wilderness. In the New Testament, John 1:14 says the Word became flesh and lived among us, using a word that means He tabernacled or pitched His tent among us.

The veil divided the holy place from the most holy place (26:33). Cherubim on the veil recall the cherubim who guarded the way to the tree of life after Eden (Genesis 3:24). Access to God's nearest presence was restricted because of sin. In the New Testament, at Jesus' death the temple veil was torn from top to bottom (Mark 15:38). Christians have read this as God Himself opening the way. Hebrews 10:19-22 invites believers to draw near with a sincere heart through the veil, which Hebrews calls his flesh.

Show What You Know

  1. What would priests see when they looked up inside the tabernacle?

  2. Why was the tabernacle made to be portable?

  3. What does John 1:14 say the Word did?

  4. What do the cherubim on the veil recall?

  5. What did the torn veil show?
