A Home for God's Presence

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Moses to ask the people for gifts from everyone who wanted to give. The people could bring gold, silver, cloth, wood, oil and pretty stones.

God said, Let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them. God showed Moses how to make each thing. It was like a plan for a building.

First was a special box called the ark. It was covered with gold. On top were two gold angels with wings. There was a gold table for bread and a gold lampstand with seven lamps. God wanted to be close to His people.

Exodus 25 · Grade 3

The Ark, the Table and the Lampstand

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Moses to have the people bring him an offering from everyone whose heart was willing. They would bring gold, silver, bronze, blue and purple and red yarn, fine linen, goat hair, ram skins, wood, oil, spices and precious stones.

God said, Let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them. It was to be made just like the pattern God showed Moses. First they would make an ark of wood covered with gold. It had rings and poles so it could be carried. The tablets of the law would go inside. On top was the mercy seat with two cherubim of gold. Their wings would spread over it. God said, There I will meet with you.

Next was a table covered with gold. The bread of the presence would always be on it before God. Then they would make a lampstand of pure gold. It had six branches and a center stem, with cups shaped like almond flowers. It held seven lamps to give light. God said, See that you make them after their pattern, which has been shown to you on the mountain.

Memory Verse

“Speak to the children of Israel, that they take an offering for me. From everyone whose heart makes him willing you shall take my offering.

Exodus 25 · Grade 4

God Among His People

Name Date

Read and Think

God asked for gifts from willing hearts. He did not force anyone to give. God loves a cheerful giver (2 Corinthians 9:7).

The tabernacle would show that God lived among His people. The ark was the most holy object. God said He would meet with Moses above the mercy seat, between the cherubim.

The bread showed that God provides. The lampstand gave light in the holy place. In the New Testament, Jesus calls himself the bread of life and the light of the world. God's dwelling with His people is seen, Christians believe, in Jesus, who lived among us (John 1:14).

Show What You Know

  1. What kind of hearts did God want gifts from?

  2. Where did God say He would meet with Moses?

  3. What did the bread and lampstand show?

  4. How did God's dwelling come true fully?

Exodus 25 · Grade 5

A Sanctuary for God

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 25-31 gives the instructions for the tabernacle, and chapters 35-40 describe its building. This large section shows how important God's presence is to the story. The purpose is clear: Let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them (25:8). The materials came as a freewill offering from those whose hearts moved them. Exodus 12:35-36 tells how the Egyptians gave Israel silver and gold when they left.

The ark of the covenant was a chest of acacia wood covered with gold and carried with poles. Inside it Moses would place the testimony, the tablets of the covenant. Its lid, the mercy seat (or atonement cover), had two cherubim of hammered gold facing each other. Above it God promised, There I will meet with you. Once a year on the Day of Atonement, blood would be sprinkled there (Leviticus 16). In the New Testament, Paul uses the same word for Christ, whom God set forth as an atoning sacrifice (Romans 3:25).

The table held the bread of the presence, twelve loaves for the twelve tribes, a sign of fellowship and provision. The lampstand, hammered from one piece of pure gold, looked like a flowering almond tree and gave light in the holy place. In the New Testament, Hebrews 8:5 calls the tabernacle a copy and shadow of the heavenly things, which is why Moses had to follow the pattern exactly. Christians have read this as a picture of Christ, who John 1:14 says lived among us.

Show What You Know

  1. What was the purpose of the sanctuary, according to 25:8?

  2. Who gave the materials for the sanctuary?

  3. What was placed inside the ark?

  4. What happened on the mercy seat once a year?

  5. Why did Moses have to follow the pattern exactly?
