Be True and Fair

Name Date

Read the Story

God told His people to tell the truth. Do not say false things about others. Do not do wrong just because a crowd does it. Be fair to everyone, rich or poor.

God said that if they saw their enemy's donkey lost, they should take it back to him. If his donkey fell under a heavy load, they should help him. God wanted His people to be kind even to enemies.

Every seventh day, people and animals would rest. Three times a year, they would have a feast for God. God promised to send an angel ahead of them to guard them on the way.

Memory Verse

“Behold, I send an angel before you, to keep you by the way, and to bring you into the place which I have prepared.

Help Even Your Enemy

Name Date

Read the Story

God said, You shall not spread a false report. He also said, You shall not follow a crowd to do evil. Judges must be fair. They must not take a bribe. A bribe makes people blind to what is right. And do not treat foreigners badly, for you know how it feels to be a stranger.

If you meet your enemy's ox or donkey going the wrong way, bring it back. If you see his donkey lying under a heavy load, help him with it. For six years, farm your land. In the seventh year, let it rest so the poor and the animals can eat. Work six days, and rest on the seventh.

Three times a year, keep a feast to God: the Feast of Unleavened Bread, the Feast of Harvest and the Feast of Gathering. God said, Behold, I send an angel before you, to keep you by the way, and to bring you into the place which I have prepared. He told them to listen to the angel's voice. God would drive out their enemies little by little.

Justice Without Favorites

Read and Think

God wants His people to be honest and fair. Lies, gossip and bribes hurt people. We should not follow a crowd to do wrong. God's people stand for the truth even when it is not popular.

God told Israel to help an enemy's animal. Loving God means doing good even to people who do not like us. In the New Testament, Jesus teaches us to love our enemies (Matthew 5:44).

God gave rest for people, animals and even the land. He gave feasts to remember His goodness. He promised to guard and guide His people on the way. God cares for every part of life.

Show What You Know

Exodus 23 · Grade 5

Living as God's People

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 23 completes the Book of the Covenant. It calls for honest witnesses and impartial courts: no false reports, no siding with the majority to do evil, no bribes and no favoritism toward either the rich or the poor (23:2-3, 6-8). Justice must reflect the character of God, who will not justify the wicked. The command to return an enemy's straying animal shows that God's law reaches beyond legal duty to active kindness.

Rest is woven into Israel's life. The sabbatical year let the land lie fallow so the poor and wild animals could eat. The weekly Sabbath gave rest even to servants, foreigners and animals. Three yearly feasts, Unleavened Bread, Harvest and Ingathering, would gather Israel to worship and remember God's provision. These rhythms taught trust that God would provide.

God promised, I send an angel before you, to keep you by the way. He said, my name is in him (23:21), meaning this messenger carried God's own authority. Israel was to obey him and to reject the gods of Canaan. God promised to drive out the nations little by little so the land would not become desolate. God's plans are often gradual, and He gives His people what they can handle as they grow.

Show What You Know

  1. Name two marks of a fair court in Exodus 23.

  2. How does the enemy's animal law go beyond legal duty?

  3. Who benefited from the sabbatical year?

  4. What did God mean by my name is in him?

  5. Why would God drive out the nations little by little?
