Exodus 23 · Grade 5
Living as God's People
Read and Think
Exodus 23 completes the Book of the Covenant. It calls for honest witnesses and impartial courts: no false reports, no siding with the majority to do evil, no bribes and no favoritism toward either the rich or the poor (23:2-3, 6-8). Justice must reflect the character of God, who will not justify the wicked. The command to return an enemy's straying animal shows that God's law reaches beyond legal duty to active kindness.
Rest is woven into Israel's life. The sabbatical year let the land lie fallow so the poor and wild animals could eat. The weekly Sabbath gave rest even to servants, foreigners and animals. Three yearly feasts, Unleavened Bread, Harvest and Ingathering, would gather Israel to worship and remember God's provision. These rhythms taught trust that God would provide.
God promised, I send an angel before you, to keep you by the way. He said, my name is in him (23:21), meaning this messenger carried God's own authority. Israel was to obey him and to reject the gods of Canaan. God promised to drive out the nations little by little so the land would not become desolate. God's plans are often gradual, and He gives His people what they can handle as they grow.
