Be Kind to People in Need

Name Date

Read the Story

God gave His people more rules. Some were about stealing. If a man stole an animal, he had to pay back more than he took. If you hurt something that belongs to your neighbor, you must make it right.

God told them to be kind to strangers, because they had been strangers in Egypt. God said to take care of widows and children who have no dad. God hears them when they cry.

If a poor person borrowed money, the lender must not charge extra. If a poor man gave his coat as a promise, it had to go back by sunset. He needed it to stay warm at night. God said he is gracious.

Memory Verse

“You shall not wrong an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.

Exodus 22 · Grade 3

God's Heart for the Poor

Name Date

Read the Story

God's rules taught people to respect what belongs to others. A thief had to pay back two times or more. If a man's animals ate in a neighbor's field, he paid from the best of his own field. If a fire spread, the one who started it paid for the damage. If someone borrowed an animal and it was hurt, he paid for it.

God said, You shall not wrong an alien or oppress him, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt. He said, You shall not take advantage of any widow or fatherless child. If they cried out to God, He would surely hear them.

If you lend money to a poor person, do not charge him interest. If you take his cloak as a promise that he will pay, give it back before the sun goes down. It is his only covering to sleep in. God said that when the poor person cries to Him, He will hear, because He is gracious. God also told His people to give Him the first of their harvest and to be holy people.

Memory Verse

“You shall not take advantage of any widow or fatherless child.

Exodus 22 · Grade 4

God Hears the Cry

Name Date

Read and Think

God's laws teach us to respect other people's things. When we take or damage what belongs to someone, we should make it right. Making things right is called restitution.

God has a special care for people who are weak or alone, like foreigners, widows and orphans. He said He hears their cry. Israel had been strangers in Egypt, so they should understand how it feels.

God told lenders to return a poor man's cloak by sunset for I am gracious. God's people should be generous because God is generous. James 1:27 says pure religion is to visit orphans and widows in their trouble.

Show What You Know

  1. What is restitution?

  2. Name groups God has special care for.

  3. Why should Israel understand strangers?

  4. What does James 1:27 say pure religion is?

Think About It

  1. Who among your friends or at church might feel like a stranger? How can you welcome them?

  2. How does God's kindness to you make you want to be kind to others?

Exodus 22 · Grade 5

Justice and Mercy

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 22 continues the Book of the Covenant with property laws. Theft required restitution, often double or more, so the thief would repay the victim rather than simply be punished. Damage from grazing animals or a spreading fire had to be repaid. These laws taught personal responsibility and respect for a neighbor's property, applying the eighth and tenth commandments.

The chapter then turns to God's heart for the vulnerable. Israel must not wrong or oppress the foreigner, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt. They must not take advantage of widows or orphans. God promises to hear their cry and act as their defender. Their own history of suffering was meant to make them compassionate. Scripture repeats this concern again and again (Deuteronomy 10:18-19; Psalm 68:5).

Lending to the poor was to be an act of help, not profit: no interest, and a cloak taken as a pledge must be returned at sunset. The reason given is God's own character: I will hear, for I am gracious. The chapter also calls for honoring God with the firstfruits and for Israel to be holy men to me. Holiness and compassion belong together. In the New Testament, Jesus cared for the poor, the sick and the outsider.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did theft require restitution instead of only punishment?

  2. Which commandments do these property laws apply?

  3. Why should Israel be compassionate to foreigners?

  4. What reason did God give for returning the cloak?

  5. What two things belong together in this chapter?

Think About It

  1. How can your own hard experiences make you more compassionate toward others?

  2. What would it look like for your family to help someone who is poor or alone?
