Ten Good Rules

Name Date

Read the Story

God spoke to His people from the mountain. He said, I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. Then God gave them ten good rules. We call them the Ten Commandments.

The first rules are about loving God. Have no other gods. Do not make idols. Use God's name with respect. Keep the day of rest holy.

The other rules are about loving people. Honor your father and mother. Do not murder. Be faithful in marriage. Do not steal. Do not lie. Do not want what belongs to others. God gave these rules because He loves His people.

Memory Verse

“You shall have no other gods before me.

God Speaks the Commandments

Name Date

Read the Story

God spoke all these words: I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. God reminded them that He saved them first. Then He gave the commandments.

Have no other gods before Me. Do not make idols to bow down to. Do not misuse the name of the Lord. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy. You may work six days, but the seventh day is a rest for the Lord. Honor your father and your mother.

Do not murder. Do not break your marriage promise. Do not steal. Do not lie about your neighbor. Do not covet, which means wanting what belongs to someone else. The people saw the lightning and heard the trumpet. They stood far away and shook. They asked Moses to speak to them. Moses said, Don't be afraid, for God has come to test you, and that his fear may be before you, that you won't sin.

Memory Verse

“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you.

Love God and Love Others

Name Date

Read and Think

The Ten Commandments begin with good news: I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. God did not give the law so Israel could earn His love. He gave it to people He had already rescued.

The first four commandments teach us how to love God. The last six teach us how to love our neighbor. In the New Testament, Jesus summed up the law in two commands: love God with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37-39).

No one keeps God's law perfectly. The law shows us our sin and our need for a Savior. Christians have read this as pointing to Jesus, who kept the law, and to His Spirit, who helps believers obey with thankful hearts.

Exodus 20 · Grade 5

The Ten Words

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 20 records the Ten Commandments, called the ten words in Exodus 34:28. They begin with a preface: I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. This shows the covenant pattern. The King first describes His saving acts, then states His commands. Obedience is a response to grace.

The commands are written on two tablets. The first commands concern loyalty to God alone, no idols, reverence for His name and keeping the Sabbath, which is grounded in God's own rest after six days of creation (20:11). The rest guard human life and relationships: honoring parents, protecting life, marriage, property and truth, and finally the heart itself, since coveting happens inside us. In the New Testament, Jesus taught that the law reaches our thoughts and motives (Matthew 5:21-28).

The people were terrified by the thunder and asked Moses to speak for them. Moses explained that God's purpose was that his fear may be before you, that you won't sin (20:20). Healthy fear of God is reverent awe that guards us from sin. Paul says the law shows us our sin (Romans 3:20), and he also calls it holy, righteous, and good (Romans 7:12). In the New Testament, Jesus says He came not to destroy the law but to fulfill it (Matthew 5:17).

Show What You Know

  1. What does the preface to the commandments teach?

  2. What is the Sabbath command based on?

  3. Why is the tenth commandment different?

  4. What was God's purpose in coming with fear, according to 20:20?

  5. What does Paul call the law in Romans 7:12?
