Exodus 20 · Grade 4
Love God and Love Others
Read and Think
The Ten Commandments begin with good news: I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. God did not give the law so Israel could earn His love. He gave it to people He had already rescued.
The first four commandments teach us how to love God. The last six teach us how to love our neighbor. In the New Testament, Jesus summed up the law in two commands: love God with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37-39).
No one keeps God's law perfectly. The law shows us our sin and our need for a Savior. Christians have read this as pointing to Jesus, who kept the law, and to His Spirit, who helps believers obey with thankful hearts.
