Exodus 2 · Grade 2

God Protects Baby Moses

Name Date

Read the Story

A mother had a baby boy. The king wanted to hurt baby boys, so she hid him. When he got too big to hide, she made a basket that would float. She put the baby in it and set it in the tall grass by the river. His big sister watched.

The king's daughter came to the river. She saw the basket and opened it. The baby was crying! She felt sorry for him. His sister ran up and offered to get a Hebrew woman to take care of the baby. The princess said yes. The sister got the baby's own mother!

When the boy grew bigger, he went to live with the princess. She named him Moses. When Moses grew up, he had to run away to a land called Midian. God's people were still slaves, and they cried to God. God heard them.

Memory Verse

“God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.”

Exodus 2 · Grade 3

Drawn Out of the Water

Name Date

Read the Story

A man and woman from the tribe of Levi had a son. She saw he was a fine child and hid him three months. When she could hide him no longer, she made a basket of papyrus, coated it with tar and pitch, put the child in it, and laid it in the reeds by the river. His sister stood far off to see what would happen.

Pharaoh's daughter came to bathe at the river. She saw the basket, opened it, and the baby cried. She had compassion on him and said, This is one of the Hebrews' children. His sister offered to find a Hebrew nurse, and she called the child's mother. When the child grew, he became the princess's son. She named him Moses, because I drew him out of the water.

When Moses was grown, he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people. He killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. When Pharaoh heard, he tried to kill Moses, so Moses fled to Midian. There he helped seven daughters at a well, and their father, Reuel, gave him his daughter Zipporah as his wife. In Egypt the king died, and Israel groaned in slavery. God heard their groaning and remembered His covenant.

Memory Verse

“God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.”

God Hears and Remembers

Name Date

Read and Think

Moses' mother trusted God and protected her son. Hebrews 11:23 says that by faith Moses' parents hid him and were not afraid of the king's command.

God worked in amazing ways. The daughter of the very king who wanted baby boys to die rescued Moses. Moses' own mother was even paid to nurse him. God can turn the plans of the powerful upside down.

Moses tried to help his people in his own way and by his own strength, and it went badly. He had to run away. But God had not forgotten His people. He heard their cries and remembered His promise to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

  1. What does Hebrews 11:23 say about Moses' parents?

  2. How did God turn Pharaoh's plan upside down?

  3. What went wrong when Moses tried to help in his own way?

  4. What did God remember?

Exodus 2 · Grade 5

God Prepares a Deliverer

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 2 tells the birth of Israel's deliverer with quiet faith. Moses' mother saw that he was a fine child and hid him. When she placed him in the Nile, she built a basket (the same Hebrew word used for Noah's ark). As God preserved Noah in an ark on the waters, He preserved Moses on the river where Pharaoh had ordered boys to die.

God's providence is everywhere. Pharaoh's own daughter shows compassion, Miriam speaks up wisely, and Moses' mother nurses him. Moses grows up in Pharaoh's household, and the New Testament says he was taught all the wisdom of the Egyptians (Acts 7:22), yet he knows he belongs to the Hebrews. Hebrews 11:24-26 says Moses chose to suffer with God's people rather than enjoy the pleasures of sin.

At forty (Acts 7:23), Moses tries to deliver his people by force, killing an Egyptian. The next day a Hebrew rejects him: Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Moses flees to Midian, where he spends years as a shepherd. God was humbling and preparing him. The chapter ends with four powerful verbs about God: He heard, remembered, saw and took notice of (was concerned about) His people. Their deliverance was coming.

Show What You Know

  1. What connection does the word basket make?

  2. What did Moses choose according to Hebrews 11:24-26?

  3. How did Moses try to deliver his people at forty?

  4. What was God doing during Moses' years in Midian?

  5. What four things does the chapter say God did?
