God Comes to the Mountain

Name Date

Read the Story

God's people came to a big mountain called Sinai. They set up camp at the bottom. Moses went up to talk with God.

God said he had carried them like an eagle carries its babies. If they obeyed him, they would be his special people. The people promised to do all that God said.

God told the people to get ready for three days. They washed their clothes. On the third day there was thunder and lightning. A thick cloud covered the mountain. A trumpet blew very loud. The mountain shook, and smoke went up, because God came down on it in fire.

Memory Verse

“‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings, and brought you to myself.”

Exodus 19 · Grade 3

A Holy Nation

Name Date

Read the Story

Three months after they left Egypt, God's people came to the desert of Sinai. They camped in front of the mountain. Moses went up to God. God told him what to say to the people.

God reminded them what he did to Egypt, and how he carried them on eagles' wings and brought them to himself. If they obeyed his voice and kept his covenant, they would be his own treasure, a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. Moses told the elders. All the people said, All that Yahweh has spoken we will do.

God told them to be ready on the third day, because he would come down on the mountain where all could see. Moses set a border around the mountain. No one could touch it. The people washed their clothes. On the third day, there was thunder, lightning and a thick cloud. A trumpet blew loud and long, and the people shook with fear. Moses led them out to meet God. The mountain was full of smoke, because God came down in fire. The whole mountain shook.

Memory Verse

“Moses led the people out of the camp to meet God; and they stood at the lower part of the mountain.”

God's Treasured People

Name Date

Read and Think

At Sinai, God reminded Israel that He had rescued them first. Before He gave any laws, He said, I bore you on eagles' wings, and brought you to myself. God saved them because He loved them, not because they had earned it.

God called Israel to be His treasure, a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. They were to show the world what God is like. The people promised to obey.

Then God showed His holiness. Thunder, lightning, fire, smoke and a loud trumpet filled the mountain. The people had to prepare and keep a border. God is near to His people, but He is also holy and awesome.

Show What You Know

  1. What did God do for Israel before He gave them laws?

  2. What three things did God call Israel?

  3. Name two signs of God's holiness on the mountain.

  4. Why did the people need a border around the mountain?

Think About It

  1. God rescued Israel before He gave them rules. Why does that order matter for how we obey God?

  2. How can you show others what God is like this week?

Memory Verse

“‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings, and brought you to myself.”

Exodus 19 · Grade 5

Covenant at Sinai

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 19 begins the central section of the book. Israel camps at Sinai, the mountain where God first spoke to Moses from the burning bush (3:12). God's sign to Moses has come true: the people are worshiping God at this mountain. God's message begins with grace: You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings, and brought you to myself. Rescue comes first; covenant obligations follow.

God offers Israel a special role: my own possession from among all peoples, a kingdom of priests and a holy nation (19:5-6). As priests stand between God and people, Israel was to bring God's light to the nations. In the New Testament, Peter applies these same words to the church (1 Peter 2:9). The people agree, All that Yahweh has spoken we will do, a promise they will soon struggle to keep.

God then comes down on the mountain with thunder, lightning, a thick cloud, fire, smoke and a trumpet growing louder and louder. The people must consecrate themselves and keep a boundary. This awesome scene shows God's holiness and the distance sin creates. In the New Testament, Hebrews 12:18-24 contrasts Sinai with Mount Zion: through Jesus, the mediator of a new covenant, believers can draw near to God with confidence and reverence.

Show What You Know

  1. What earlier sign to Moses was fulfilled at Sinai?

  2. What comes first in God's message, grace or law?

  3. What role did God give Israel among the nations?

  4. Who does Peter apply these words to?

  5. How does Hebrews 12 contrast Sinai with Mount Zion?
