Helpers for Moses

Name Date

Read the Story

Moses' father-in-law, Jethro, came to visit. He brought Moses' wife and sons. Moses told Jethro everything God had done. Jethro was happy. He said, Now I know that Yahweh is greater than all gods.

The next day, Jethro watched Moses. People lined up from morning until evening to ask Moses to help solve their problems. Jethro said it was too much work for Moses. He would wear himself out!

Jethro told Moses to choose good men who loved God and told the truth. They could help with the small problems, and Moses could take care of the big ones. Moses listened and did what Jethro said.

Memory Verse

Now I know that Yahweh is greater than all gods because of the way that they treated people arrogantly.”

You Will Wear Away

Name Date

Read the Story

Jethro, the priest of Midian, heard all that God had done for Israel. He came with Zipporah and her two sons, Gershom and Eliezer, to the mountain of God. Moses told him everything Yahweh had done to Pharaoh and how Yahweh had delivered them. Jethro rejoiced and said, Blessed be Yahweh, who has delivered you. He added, Now I know that Yahweh is greater than all gods. He offered sacrifices, and Aaron and the elders ate with him before God.

The next day Moses sat to judge the people, and they stood around him from morning to evening. Jethro said, The thing that you do is not good. You will surely wear away, both you, and this people that is with you; for the thing is too heavy for you.

Jethro told Moses to represent the people before God and teach them God's laws. He should choose able men who feared God, men of truth who hated unjust gain, to lead groups of thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens. They would judge the small matters and bring the great matters to Moses. Moses listened to his father-in-law and did all that he said. Then Jethro went home.

Memory Verse

Jethro said, “Blessed be Yahweh, who has delivered you out of the hand of the Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who has delivered the people from under the hand of the Egyptians.

Wise Counsel

Name Date

Read and Think

Jethro was not an Israelite, but he heard what God had done and praised Him. God's mighty acts were meant to bring people from all nations to know Him.

Moses was trying to do everything alone. Jethro saw that this would wear Moses out and frustrate the people. Even good leaders need help.

Moses humbly accepted advice. Proverbs 12:15 says that a wise person listens to advice. The new leaders had to fear God and be honest, because godly character matters most in leaders.

Show What You Know

  1. What did Jethro do when he heard what God had done?

  2. Why was Moses' way of working a problem?

  3. What does Proverbs 12:15 say?

  4. What character did the leaders need?

Exodus 18 · Grade 5

Shared Leadership

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 18 offers a pause between the Red Sea and Sinai. Jethro, a Midianite priest, hears Moses' testimony and confesses, Now I know that Yahweh is greater than all gods. The exodus was a witness to the nations, as God intended (9:16). Christians have read Jethro's sacrifice and fellowship meal with Israel's elders as a picture of Gentiles joining in worship of the true God.

Jethro's advice is practical wisdom. Moses' attempt to judge every case alone was unsustainable, harmful to both Moses and the people. Jethro recommends that Moses focus on his unique calling: to represent the people before God and to teach them God's statutes. Capable leaders would handle ordinary cases. This principle appears again in Acts 6, when the apostles appoint helpers so they can devote themselves to prayer and the word.

The qualifications are telling: able men which fear God: men of truth, hating unjust gain. Competence matters, but so do reverence and integrity. In the New Testament, the qualifications for church leaders also focus on character (1 Timothy 3). Moses' willingness to receive counsel from his father-in-law shows humility. Numbers 12:3 later describes Moses as very humble.

Show What You Know

  1. What did Jethro confess?

  2. Christians have read Jethro's fellowship meal as a picture of what?

  3. What was Moses' unique calling according to Jethro?

  4. Where does a similar principle appear in the New Testament?

  5. What do the qualifications for leaders emphasize?

Think About It

  1. How does your church share the work of ministry? How could you help?

  2. Why is it humble and wise to accept advice from others?

Memory Verse

“Moreover you shall provide out of all the people able men which fear God: men of truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.”
