Water from a Rock

Name Date

Read the Story

God's people were thirsty. They argued with Moses and said, Is Yahweh among us, or not? Moses prayed. God told Moses to hit the rock with his rod. Moses did, and water came out!

Then some enemies came to fight. Joshua led Israel's soldiers. Moses went up a hill and held up his hands with God's rod. When his hands were up, Israel was winning. When they came down, the enemies were winning.

Aaron and Hur helped. They put a rock under Moses to sit on. They held up his hands, one on each side, until the sun went down. Israel won! Moses built an altar and called it Yahweh our Banner.

Memory Verse

Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb. You shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

Exodus 17 · Grade 3

Aaron and Hur

Name Date

Read the Story

At Rephidim there was no water. The people quarreled with Moses: Give us water to drink. Moses cried to Yahweh, What shall I do with these people? They are almost ready to stone me. God said, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb. You shall strike the rock, and water will come out. He named the place Massah and Meribah, because they tested Yahweh, saying, Is Yahweh among us, or not?

Amalek came and fought with Israel. Moses told Joshua to choose men and fight, while he stood on the top of the hill with God's rod in his hand. When Moses held up his hand, Israel prevailed. When he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

Moses' hands were heavy, so they put a stone under him and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on each side. His hands were steady until sunset, and Joshua defeated Amalek. Moses built an altar and called its name Yahweh our Banner.

Memory Verse

“But Moses’ hands were heavy; so they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side. His hands were steady until sunset.”

Exodus 17 · Grade 4

Water From the Rock

Name Date

Read and Think

The people asked, Is Yahweh among us, or not? even though the cloud of His presence was right there. Doubting God after He has shown His care is called testing God. Yet God gave them water from the rock.

In the battle, Israel's victory came from God, pictured by Moses lifting God's rod. Joshua fought, but the battle depended on God's power.

Moses got tired, and Aaron and Hur helped him. God's people need each other. We can hold each other up by praying and helping.

Show What You Know

  1. What does it mean to test God?

  2. Where did Israel's victory come from?

  3. Who fought in the battle?

  4. How did Aaron and Hur show God's people need each other?

Think About It

  1. Who are the Aaron and Hur in your life who help you? How can you help someone else?

  2. In the New Testament, 1 Corinthians 10:4 links the rock with Christ. How does Jesus give us living water?

Memory Verse

Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock in Horeb. You shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink.” Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

Exodus 17 · Grade 5

Rock and Banner

Name Date

Read and Think

At Rephidim the people's thirst turns into a quarrel. Their question, Is Yahweh among us, or not?, reveals unbelief despite the pillar of cloud overhead. The place names Massah (testing) and Meribah (quarreling) became reminders of this failure (Psalm 95:8-9; Hebrews 3:8). Yet God graciously stands on the rock as Moses strikes it, and water flows. Christians have read this as a picture of Christ, since Paul writes that the rock was Christ (1 Corinthians 10:4), who was struck so that living water could flow to His people (John 7:37-39).

The battle with Amalek is Israel's first war. Joshua, mentioned here for the first time, leads the army, while Moses intercedes on the hill with God's rod. The rise and fall of the battle with Moses' hands teaches that victory comes from God, not merely from military strength.

When Moses grows weary, Aaron and Hur support him, a beautiful picture of shared ministry and prayer. Moses records the event and builds an altar named Yahweh-Nissi, Yahweh our Banner. A banner was a rallying flag in battle. God Himself is the one His people rally around. Christians have read this as a picture of Christ, who always lives to intercede for us (Hebrews 7:25).

Show What You Know

  1. What do Massah and Meribah mean?

  2. What does Paul say about the rock?

  3. What did the rise and fall of Moses' hands teach?

  4. What was a banner used for?

  5. How is Christ a better intercessor than Moses?
