Singing to God

Name Date

Read the Story

God's people were safe on the other side of the sea! Moses and the people sang a happy song to God. They sang that God was their strength and their song, and he saved them!

Moses' sister Miriam took a tambourine. All the women danced and sang, Sing to Yahweh, for he has triumphed gloriously.

Three days later, the people found water, but it tasted bad. They grumbled. Moses prayed, and God showed him a tree. Moses threw it in the water, and the water became sweet! God said, I am Yahweh who heals you.

“Yah is my strength and song. He has become my salvation. This is my God, and I will praise him; my father’s God, and I will exalt him.”

Who Is Like You?

Name Date

Read the Story

Then Moses and Israel sang: I will sing to Yahweh, for he has triumphed gloriously. He has thrown the horse and his rider into the sea. Yah is my strength and song. He has become my salvation. This is my God, and I will praise him. They praised God's right hand, glorious in power. Who is like you, Yahweh, among the gods? Who is like you, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

They sang that God, in His loving kindness, had led the people He redeemed and would bring them to His holy dwelling. Yahweh will reign forever and ever. Miriam the prophetess, Aaron's sister, took a tambourine, and all the women followed with tambourines and dances. Miriam answered them, Sing to Yahweh, for he has triumphed gloriously.

They went three days in the wilderness and found no water. At Marah the water was bitter. The people murmured, What shall we drink? Moses cried to Yahweh, who showed him a tree. He threw it into the water, and it became sweet. God promised that if they listened to his voice and did what was right, he would not put on them the diseases he put on the Egyptians. He said, I am Yahweh who heals you. They came to Elim, with twelve springs and seventy palm trees.

Memory Verse

“You, in your loving kindness, have led the people that you have redeemed. You have guided them in your strength to your holy habitation.

From Praise to Grumbling

Name Date

Read and Think

After the Red Sea, Israel's first response was worship. Their song praised God for who He is and what He had done. Praise is the right response to God's salvation.

Only three days later, the people grumbled about bitter water. It is easy to praise God after a miracle and then forget Him when the next problem comes.

God was patient. He made the bitter water sweet and revealed Himself as the God who heals. Then He led them to Elim, a place of rest with plenty of water. God provides for His people.

Exodus 15 · Grade 5

The First Song of Redemption

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 15 contains the first major song in the Bible. It celebrates God as a warrior who defeated Egypt (15:3) and as a holy God unlike any other: Who is like you, Yahweh, among the gods? The first half looks back at the victory at the sea; the second half looks forward to God planting His people in His land and sanctuary (15:17). Salvation leads to worship and to dwelling with God.

Revelation 15:3 describes the redeemed in heaven singing the song of Moses and the song of the Lamb. Christians have read this as a picture of salvation in Christ, which also leads to songs of praise. Miriam's leadership in worship shows that God's people, men and women, young and old, joined in celebrating His victory.

The scene at Marah is a test. Right after their greatest worship, the people grumble. God answers with grace, sweetening the water through a tree, and teaches that He is Yahweh who heals you (Yahweh Rophe). Christians have read this as a picture of the cross, which turns bitterness into blessing. God then brings them to Elim, an oasis, showing that His testing is always mixed with His care.

Show What You Know

  1. How is the Song of Moses structured?

  2. What does Revelation 15:3 describe?

  3. What does Miriam's role show?

  4. What name did God reveal at Marah?

  5. What do many Christians see in the tree at Marah?
