Exodus 15 · Grade 5

The First Song of Redemption

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 15 contains the first major song in the Bible. It celebrates God as a warrior who defeated Egypt (15:3) and as a holy God unlike any other: Who is like you, Yahweh, among the gods? The first half looks back at the victory at the sea; the second half looks forward to God planting His people in His land and sanctuary (15:17). Salvation leads to worship and to dwelling with God.

Revelation 15:3 describes the redeemed in heaven singing the song of Moses and the song of the Lamb. Christians have read this as a picture of salvation in Christ, which also leads to songs of praise. Miriam's leadership in worship shows that God's people, men and women, young and old, joined in celebrating His victory.

The scene at Marah is a test. Right after their greatest worship, the people grumble. God answers with grace, sweetening the water through a tree, and teaches that He is Yahweh who heals you (Yahweh Rophe). Christians have read this as a picture of the cross, which turns bitterness into blessing. God then brings them to Elim, an oasis, showing that His testing is always mixed with His care.
