God Opens the Sea

Name Date

Read the Story

God's people camped by the sea. Then Pharaoh changed his mind. He chased them with his soldiers and chariots. God's people were very scared. They cried and wished they had never left Egypt.

Moses told them not to be afraid. He said to stand still and watch God save them, because God would fight for them. The cloud moved behind God's people to keep the Egyptians away.

Moses held out his hand over the sea. God sent a strong wind all night. The water split, and there was a dry path! The people walked through with walls of water on each side. When the Egyptians followed, the water came back. God's people were safe, and they trusted God.

Memory Verse

Moses said to the people, “Don’t be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of Yahweh, which he will work for you today; for you will never again see the Egyptians whom you have seen today.

God Opens the Sea

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Moses to camp by the sea. God said Pharaoh would follow them, but the Egyptians shall know that I am Yahweh. Pharaoh took six hundred chosen chariots and pursued Israel. When Israel saw the Egyptians, they were very afraid and cried out to Yahweh. They said to Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness?

Moses said, Don't be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of Yahweh, which he will work for you today. He said, Yahweh will fight for you, and you shall be still. God told Moses to tell the people to go forward. The angel of God and the pillar of cloud moved behind them, giving darkness to Egypt and light to Israel.

Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and Yahweh drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night, making dry land. Israel went into the middle of the sea on dry ground, with the waters a wall on their right and left. The Egyptians followed, but God troubled their army and made their chariot wheels come off. Moses stretched out his hand again, and the sea returned. Israel saw the great work Yahweh did, and the people feared Yahweh and believed in Him and in His servant Moses.

Memory Verse

“The children of Israel went into the middle of the sea on the dry ground; and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.”

The Lord Fights for Us

Name Date

Read and Think

God's people faced the sea in front and the army behind. They felt trapped. They forgot all God had just done and complained in fear.

Moses gave them three commands: Don't be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of Yahweh Then God added, Go forward. Faith means trusting God and obeying, even when we can't see how He will help.

God did what no one else could do. He made a path through the sea. The same waters that saved Israel brought judgment on Egypt. Israel's fear turned into faith and worship.

Exodus 14 · Grade 5

Salvation Through the Sea

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 14 is the climax of Israel's deliverance. God deliberately leads Israel to a place where they seem trapped, so that He would get honor over Pharaoh. Pharaoh's final pursuit shows the depth of his hardened heart; even after ten plagues, he wants his slaves back. Israel's panic reveals how quickly fear can erase memory of God's power.

Moses' words are among the most beloved in Scripture: Don't be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of Yahweh. He added, Yahweh will fight for you. Salvation is God's work, received by faith. Yet God also commands, Go forward. Resting in God and obeying God go together. The pillar of cloud separates the two camps: darkness to Egypt, light to Israel.

The crossing is described as a real miracle in history: a strong east wind blowing all night, dry ground, walls of water. The same God who divided the waters at creation (Genesis 1:9) now divides the sea to create a new people. Paul calls this crossing a kind of baptism (1 Corinthians 10:1-2), a picture of passing from death to new life. In the New Testament, Hebrews 11:29 says that by faith they passed through the Red Sea as on dry land.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did God lead Israel to a place where they seemed trapped?

  2. What does Pharaoh's final pursuit reveal?

  3. How do resting in God and obeying God go together here?

  4. What creation event does the crossing echo?

  5. How does Paul describe the crossing in 1 Corinthians 10:1-2?
