Exodus 14 · Grade 5
Salvation Through the Sea
Read and Think
Exodus 14 is the climax of Israel's deliverance. God deliberately leads Israel to a place where they seem trapped, so that He would get honor over Pharaoh. Pharaoh's final pursuit shows the depth of his hardened heart; even after ten plagues, he wants his slaves back. Israel's panic reveals how quickly fear can erase memory of God's power.
Moses' words are among the most beloved in Scripture: Don't be afraid. Stand still, and see the salvation of Yahweh. He added, Yahweh will fight for you. Salvation is God's work, received by faith. Yet God also commands, Go forward. Resting in God and obeying God go together. The pillar of cloud separates the two camps: darkness to Egypt, light to Israel.
The crossing is described as a real miracle in history: a strong east wind blowing all night, dry ground, walls of water. The same God who divided the waters at creation (Genesis 1:9) now divides the sea to create a new people. Paul calls this crossing a kind of baptism (1 Corinthians 10:1-2), a picture of passing from death to new life. In the New Testament, Hebrews 11:29 says that by faith they passed through the Red Sea as on dry land.
