A Cloud and a Fire

Name Date

Read the Story

God's people left Egypt. Moses said, Remember this day. God brought them out with his strong hand. Every year they would eat flat bread for seven days to remember.

God did not take them the short way, where there might be war. He led them through the wilderness instead. Moses also brought Joseph's bones, because Joseph had asked them to.

God went in front of His people. In the daytime He was in a tall cloud. At night He was in a tall fire that gave them light. God never left them!

Memory Verse

Moses said to the people, “Remember this day, in which you came out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand Yahweh brought you out from this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten.

Joseph's Bones

Name Date

Read the Story

Yahweh said, Sanctify to me all the firstborn. He added, It is mine. Moses said, Remember this day, in which you came out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand Yahweh brought you out. For seven days they would eat unleavened bread. Parents would tell their children, It is because of that which Yahweh did for me when I came out of Egypt.

Firstborn sons would be redeemed, bought back. When their children asked, What is this? they would say, By strength of hand Yahweh brought us out from Egypt. They would explain why they redeem their firstborn sons.

God didn't lead them by the way of the Philistines, though it was near, for he said the people might change their minds when they saw war and go back to Egypt. He led them around by the wilderness by the Red Sea. Moses took Joseph's bones, because Joseph had made Israel swear to carry them. Yahweh went before them by day in a pillar of cloud and by night in a pillar of fire. The pillars didn't depart from before the people.

Memory Verse

Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for he had made the children of Israel swear, saying, “God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones away from here with you.”

God Knows the Best Way

Name Date

Read and Think

God told Israel to set apart their firstborn to Him, because He had spared their firstborn at Passover. Everything we have belongs to God, and we should give Him our best.

God chose a longer road for Israel. He knew they weren't ready for war. Sometimes God leads us on a path that seems longer, but He knows what is best for us.

Carrying Joseph's bones showed that God keeps His promises, even hundreds of years later. The pillar of cloud and fire showed that God was always with His people, day and night.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did God claim Israel's firstborn?

  2. Why did God choose a longer road?

  3. What did carrying Joseph's bones show?

  4. What did the pillar of cloud and fire show?

Think About It

  1. Proverbs 3:5-6 says God will direct our paths. When has God's way seemed longer but turned out best?

  2. How does God guide you today, without a pillar of cloud?

Memory Verse

Moses said to the people, “Remember this day, in which you came out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand Yahweh brought you out from this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten.

Exodus 13 · Grade 5

Led by God's Presence

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 13 teaches Israel how to remember their redemption. The firstborn of people and animals belong to God because He spared Israel's firstborn. Firstborn sons were to be redeemed with a sacrifice, a reminder that their lives had been bought back. In the New Testament, Mary and Joseph followed this law when they presented the baby Jesus at the temple (Luke 2:22-23).

The Feast of Unleavened Bread was a teaching tool. Parents explain it personally: because of that which Yahweh did for me. Each generation was to treat the exodus as its own story. The words would be like a sign on your hand and a memorial between your eyes, meaning God's deliverance should shape what they did and what they thought about.

God's route shows His wisdom and compassion. He avoids the coastal road through Philistine territory, knowing the people would lose heart if they faced war. Moses carries Joseph's bones, fulfilling Genesis 50:25. Above all, Yahweh Himself leads them in the pillar of cloud and fire. This visible sign of God's presence never departed from them in the wilderness. Later, the cloud would fill the tabernacle (40:34-38). In the New Testament, John 1:14 says the Word became flesh and lived among us.

Show What You Know

  1. Why did the firstborn belong to God?

  2. Who followed this law in the New Testament?

  3. What does a sign on your hand and between your eyes mean?

  4. How did God's route show compassion?

  5. How does the pillar connect to later Scripture?
