Exodus 13 · Grade 5

Led by God's Presence

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 13 teaches Israel how to remember their redemption. The firstborn of people and animals belong to God because He spared Israel's firstborn. Firstborn sons were to be redeemed with a sacrifice, a reminder that their lives had been bought back. In the New Testament, Mary and Joseph followed this law when they presented the baby Jesus at the temple (Luke 2:22-23).

The Feast of Unleavened Bread was a teaching tool. Parents explain it personally: because of that which Yahweh did for me. Each generation was to treat the exodus as its own story. The words would be like a sign on your hand and a memorial between your eyes, meaning God's deliverance should shape what they did and what they thought about.

God's route shows His wisdom and compassion. He avoids the coastal road through Philistine territory, knowing the people would lose heart if they faced war. Moses carries Joseph's bones, fulfilling Genesis 50:25. Above all, Yahweh Himself leads them in the pillar of cloud and fire. This visible sign of God's presence never departed from them in the wilderness. Later, the cloud would fill the tabernacle (40:34-38). In the New Testament, John 1:14 says the Word became flesh and lived among us.
