The Lamb and the Door

Name Date

Read the Story

God told His people how to be safe from the last plague. Each family took a perfect lamb. They put some of the lamb's blood on the sides and top of their front door.

That night they ate the lamb with flat bread and bitter plants. They wore their shoes and held their walking sticks, ready to go! God said, When I see the blood, I will pass over you.

At midnight, the last plague came on Egypt. But every house with blood on the door was safe. Pharaoh said, Go! God's people left Egypt. They were free! God told them to remember this night every year. It is called the Passover.

Memory Verse

“The blood shall be to you for a token on the houses where you are. When I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.”

Exodus 12 · Grade 3

The Blood on the Doors

Name Date

Read the Story

Yahweh said this month would be the first month of the year for Israel. On the tenth day, each household should take a lamb, a male a year old without blemish. On the fourteenth day they would kill it at evening and put some of its blood on the two doorposts and the lintel of the houses. They would eat it roasted, with unleavened bread and bitter herbs, with their belts on, their sandals on their feet and their staff in their hand, eating in haste. It is Yahweh's Passover.

The blood shall be to you for a token on the houses where you are. When I see the blood, I will pass over you. God commanded them to keep this feast forever. When their children asked, What do you mean by this service? they would say, It is the sacrifice of Yahweh's Passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt. The people bowed and worshiped, and did as Yahweh commanded.

At midnight Yahweh struck the firstborn in Egypt, and there was a great cry, for there was not a house without someone dead. Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron by night and told them to rise up, go, and serve Yahweh, and to bless him also. The Egyptians urged them to hurry, and gave them silver, gold and clothing. About 600,000 men on foot, besides children, left with a mixed multitude. After 430 years, on that same day, Yahweh brought Israel out of Egypt.

Memory Verse

“The blood shall be to you for a token on the houses where you are. When I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.”

Exodus 12 · Grade 4

Christ Our Passover

Name Date

Read and Think

Passover was God's way of rescuing Israel from the final judgment. The firstborn in Israel were not safe because they were better people, but because the blood of a lamb was on their doors.

The lamb had to be perfect, without blemish. It died in the place of the firstborn. God said, When I see the blood, I will pass over you.

In the New Testament, Paul calls Christ our Passover lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7). Christians have read this as a picture of Jesus, the Lamb of God. His blood saves us from sin and judgment. In the New Testament, Jesus died at Passover time, and He gave His followers the Lord's Supper to remember Him.

Exodus 12 · Grade 5

The Lamb and the Exodus

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 12 is the center of Israel's story. God reorders their calendar so their year begins with redemption. Every detail of the Passover teaches. The lamb must be without blemish and is slain in place of the firstborn. Its blood marks the house as under God's protection. Unleavened bread recalls the haste of departure and later becomes a picture of putting away sin (1 Corinthians 5:7-8). Bitter herbs recall the bitterness of slavery.

The judgment on Egypt's firstborn is a sobering part of the story, and Scripture does not hide its sorrow: there was a great cry in Egypt. It was the climax of God's judgment on Egypt's gods (12:12) and on generations of oppression. Yet God provided a way of escape for anyone who trusted His word. The mixed multitude that left with Israel suggests some non-Israelites believed and joined them, and God's law made a way for foreigners to join in the Passover through the covenant sign (12:48).

Christians have read this as a picture of Jesus. He died at Passover (John 19:14), no bone of His was broken (John 19:36; Exodus 12:46), and Paul calls Christ our Passover lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7). In the New Testament, at the Last Supper, a Passover meal, Jesus said the cup was the new covenant in his blood (Luke 22:20). As Israel was redeemed from slavery in Egypt, believers are redeemed from slavery to sin.

Show What You Know

  1. What did the unleavened bread and bitter herbs recall?

  2. What does the mixed multitude suggest?

  3. What detail about the lamb is fulfilled in John 19:36?

  4. What did Jesus say about the cup at the Last Supper?

  5. How does Passover picture salvation in Christ?
