Exodus 11 · Grade 3

A Distinction

Name Date

Read the Story

Yahweh told Moses he would bring one more plague on Pharaoh and on Egypt. Afterward Pharaoh would let them go, and would even drive them out. He told the people to ask their neighbors for jewels of silver and gold. Yahweh gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. Moses also was very great in Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh's servants and the people.

Moses warned Pharaoh that about midnight God would go out into the middle of Egypt, and the firstborn of Egypt would die. There would be a great cry in Egypt. But God would protect Israel, that you may know that Yahweh makes a distinction between the Egyptians and Israel.

Moses said Pharaoh's servants would bow before him and beg Israel to leave. Then he went out from Pharaoh in hot anger. Yahweh said, Pharaoh won't listen to you, that my wonders may be multiplied. Moses and Aaron had done all these wonders, but Pharaoh's heart was hardened.

Memory Verse

“But against any of the children of Israel a dog won’t even bark or move its tongue, against man or animal, that you may know that Yahweh makes a distinction between the Egyptians and Israel.”

God's Patience and Judgment

Name Date

Read and Think

God had warned Pharaoh again and again through nine plagues. God is patient, but there comes a time when judgment falls on those who keep refusing Him.

Pharaoh had ordered Israel's baby boys thrown into the Nile. Now judgment would come on Egypt's firstborn. God is just, and He sees every wrong.

God promised to protect His people and make a distinction between them and Egypt. Israel would leave Egypt with silver and gold, just as God promised Abraham they would leave with great possessions (Genesis 15:14).

Show What You Know

  1. How many plagues had God sent before this warning?

  2. What wrong had Pharaoh done to Israel's babies?

  3. What did God promise His people?

  4. What promise to Abraham did the gold and silver fulfill?

Exodus 11 · Grade 5

The Final Warning

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 11 is a solemn pause before the climax. God announces the last plague, the death of the firstborn. This judgment answers Pharaoh's earlier cruelty: Israel is God's firstborn son (4:22-23), and Pharaoh had tried to destroy Israel's sons. God had warned Pharaoh of this from the start, and nine plagues had shown His power and patience.

Two details show God's care for Israel. First, the Egyptians give silver and gold, fulfilling God's word to Abraham (Genesis 15:14) and to Moses (3:21-22). Later, some of this gold would be offered to build the tabernacle. Second, God makes a distinction: not even a dog will bark against Israel. Israel's safety is entirely by God's grace.

Moses leaves Pharaoh in hot anger, a righteous anger at Pharaoh's stubbornness and the suffering it would cause. The chapter's closing summary reminds readers that Pharaoh's hardening was part of God's sovereign plan to multiply His wonders. Scripture teaches that God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked (Ezekiel 33:11). This sobering chapter calls readers to take God's warnings seriously.

Show What You Know

  1. How does the final plague relate to 4:22-23?

  2. What promises did the gold and silver fulfill?

  3. How was the gold later used?

  4. What did God's distinction show?

  5. What does Ezekiel 33:11 teach?

Think About It

  1. Why is it important to take God's warnings seriously?

  2. Israel's safety came only by God's grace. How is our salvation also by grace?

Memory Verse

“But against any of the children of Israel a dog won’t even bark or move its tongue, against man or animal, that you may know that Yahweh makes a distinction between the Egyptians and Israel.”
