Exodus 11 · Grade 5

The Final Warning

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 11 is a solemn pause before the climax. God announces the last plague, the death of the firstborn. This judgment answers Pharaoh's earlier cruelty: Israel is God's firstborn son (4:22-23), and Pharaoh had tried to destroy Israel's sons. God had warned Pharaoh of this from the start, and nine plagues had shown His power and patience.

Two details show God's care for Israel. First, the Egyptians give silver and gold, fulfilling God's word to Abraham (Genesis 15:14) and to Moses (3:21-22). Later, some of this gold would be offered to build the tabernacle. Second, God makes a distinction: not even a dog will bark against Israel. Israel's safety is entirely by God's grace.

Moses leaves Pharaoh in hot anger, a righteous anger at Pharaoh's stubbornness and the suffering it would cause. The chapter's closing summary reminds readers that Pharaoh's hardening was part of God's sovereign plan to multiply His wonders. Scripture teaches that God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked (Ezekiel 33:11). This sobering chapter calls readers to take God's warnings seriously.

Memory Verse

“But against any of the children of Israel a dog won’t even bark or move its tongue, against man or animal, that you may know that Yahweh makes a distinction between the Egyptians and Israel.”
