Bugs and a Dark Sky

Name Date

Read the Story

God told Moses to tell his children and grandchildren what God did in Egypt. Pharaoh's helpers begged him to let the people go, because Egypt was ruined. But Pharaoh said only the men could go.

So God sent a strong wind that brought locusts. Locusts are big hopping bugs that eat plants. They covered the ground and ate every green plant. Pharaoh said, I have sinned, and Moses prayed. God blew the locusts into the sea.

Then God made it dark in Egypt for three whole days. It was so dark that people couldn't see each other. But God's people had light in their homes! Pharaoh still would not let them go.

Memory Verse

“They didn’t see one another, and nobody rose from his place for three days; but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.”

Exodus 10 · Grade 3

Darkness That Could Be Felt

Name Date

Read the Story

Yahweh said he would show his signs so that Moses could tell his son and his son's son what God had done, that you may know that I am Yahweh. Moses asked Pharaoh, How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Pharaoh's servants said, Don't you yet know that Egypt is destroyed? Pharaoh offered to let only the men go and drove Moses out.

An east wind blew all day and night, and in the morning it brought locusts. They covered the face of the whole earth so the land was darkened, and they ate every plant and fruit the hail had left. Pharaoh admitted he had sinned and asked them to forgive his sin this once. Yahweh sent a west wind that drove the locusts into the Red Sea. But Pharaoh did not let Israel go.

Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and there was thick darkness in all Egypt for three days, darkness that could be felt. They didn't see one another, but all Israel had light in their homes. Pharaoh said they could go, but their flocks and herds must stay. Moses said, Our livestock also shall go with us. Pharaoh told Moses never to see his face again. Moses said, You have spoken well.

Memory Verse

“They didn’t see one another, and nobody rose from his place for three days; but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.”

Exodus 10 · Grade 4

Telling the Next Generation

Name Date

Read and Think

God said the plagues would give parents a story to tell their children about Him. Remembering and retelling God's great works is an important way to pass on faith.

The locusts finished what the hail started. Egypt's crops were destroyed. Pharaoh's own servants begged him to give up, but his pride would not let him humble himself before God.

The darkness was so thick it could be felt, and it lasted three days. Yet in Israel's homes there was light. God protects His people and gives them light even when the world around them is dark.

Show What You Know

  1. What did God want parents to do with these stories?

  2. What kept Pharaoh from giving up?

  3. How long did the darkness last?

  4. What did God give His people in the darkness?

Exodus 10 · Grade 5

How Long Will You Refuse?

Name Date

Read and Think

Exodus 10 opens with a purpose statement for the whole plague narrative: that you may tell in the hearing of your son, and of your son's son, what things I have done. The exodus would become Israel's central story of redemption, retold in Passover, in psalms (78; 105; 106), and by the prophets. Faith is passed on as each generation remembers God's mighty acts.

Moses' question to Pharaoh goes to the heart of the matter: How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Pride is the root of Pharaoh's resistance. His own officials see that Egypt is ruined, yet he bargains again, offering to release only the men. God's command included everyone: young and old, sons and daughters, flocks and herds, for all of them were to worship Him.

The ninth plague was darkness that could be felt for three days. The contrast is vivid: all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings. Christians have read this as a picture of God's people as children of light (Ephesians 5:8). Pharaoh's last refusal ends with a threat of death, and Moses' reply, I will see your face again no more, signals that the final judgment is near.

Show What You Know

  1. What is the purpose statement at the start of chapter 10?

  2. Where else is the exodus story retold?

  3. What was the root of Pharaoh's resistance?

  4. Why did Moses refuse Pharaoh's offer to send only the men?

  5. Christians have read the light in Israel's homes as a picture of what later biblical theme?

Think About It

  1. James 4:6 says God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Where might pride be keeping you from obeying God?

  2. How can your family make a habit of remembering God's works?

Memory Verse

“They didn’t see one another, and nobody rose from his place for three days; but all the children of Israel had light in their dwellings.”
