Esther 9 · Grade 4
Turned the Other Way
Read and Think
On the thirteenth day of Adar, the enemies of the Jews hoped to rule over them. But it was turned the other way. The Jews gathered in their cities to defend themselves. No one could withstand them. The princes and governors helped the Jews, because the fear of Mordecai had fallen on them. Mordecai was great in the king's house.
The Jews defeated those who attacked them, including Haman's ten sons. But they did not take the plunder. Then they rested. They made the next day a day of feasting and gladness. They sent gifts to one another and gifts to the needy.
Mordecai wrote to all the Jews. They were to keep the fourteenth and fifteenth days of Adar every year. These were days when sorrow turned to gladness and mourning into a good day. The days were called Purim, after Pur, the lot. Queen Esther wrote with Mordecai to confirm Purim. Each generation would remember these days. Christians see in them God's deliverance.
