The Right Night

Name Date

Read the Story

On that night, the king could not sleep. He told his servants to read from the book of records. They read how Mordecai had told about two men who planned to harm the king. The king asked what honor Mordecai had been given. His servants said nothing had been done for him.

Just then, Haman came into the court. He had come to ask the king to harm Mordecai. The king asked Haman what should be done for the man the king wanted to honor. Haman thought the king must mean him. So he said to give the man the king's robe and horse. A prince should lead him through the city.

Then the king told Haman to do all this for Mordecai the Jew! Haman obeyed. He put the robe on Mordecai and led him through the city on the horse. Then Haman hurried home sad. His wife and wise men said Haman would surely fall before Mordecai. Christians see God's perfect timing in this.

An Old Record Remembered

Name Date

Read and Think

On that night the king could not sleep. He commanded that the book of records of the chronicles be read. It was found written that Mordecai had exposed a plot against the king. The king asked what honor had been given to Mordecai. His servants answered that nothing had been done.

At that very moment, Haman entered the outer court. He had come to ask the king to hang Mordecai. The king asked Haman what should be done to the man whom the king delights to honor. Haman thought in his heart that the king meant him. So he described royal clothing, the king's own horse, and a royal crown. A noble prince would lead the man through the city and proclaim his honor.

The king commanded Haman to do all of it for Mordecai the Jew. Haman had to clothe Mordecai and lead him through the city. Then Haman hurried home mourning, with his head covered. His wise men and Zeresh warned that he would not prevail against Mordecai. A sleepless night, an old record, and an early visit all came together. Christians see in this God's perfect timing.

The Great Reversal Begins

Name Date

Read and Think

On that night the king could not sleep. Of all the ways to pass a sleepless night, he commanded the book of records of the chronicles to be brought and read. The reading reached the account of Mordecai exposing Bigthana and Teresh, the doorkeepers who had sought to lay hands on the king. The king asked what honor and dignity had been given to Mordecai for this. Nothing had been done.

At that moment Haman entered the outer court to speak to the king about hanging Mordecai on the gallows he had prepared. The king asked him what should be done to the man whom the king delights to honor. Haman said in his heart that the king would delight to honor no one more than himself. He proposed royal apparel the king had worn, the horse the king had ridden, and a crown royal. A most noble prince would array the man and proclaim before him through the city square.

The king told Haman to make haste and do even so to Mordecai the Jew who sat at the king's gate. Haman had to array his enemy and proclaim his honor in public. Afterward Mordecai returned to the gate, but Haman hurried home mourning with his head covered. His wise men and Zeresh his wife told him that if Mordecai was of the seed of the Jews, Haman would not prevail but would surely fall. Even pagan advisors sensed that this people was protected. God's name is unspoken, yet Christians see His sovereign care in the reversal. Proverbs 16:18 warns that pride goes before destruction.
